Need 22re engine bay pics
I am trying to figure out what's wrong with my 1990 4Runner 22RE. I replaced the timing chain, head gasket, fuel and oil pump and now when I start it up, it will catch then die almost instantly. We think the fuel hose out off the fuel pressure regulator migh be in the wrong place. This hose leaves the bottom of the fuel pressre reg with pressurized fuel and we've plugged it into a line that goes along the bulkhead going down.
Pictures of this area would be great. I'll post my pics in a bit.

Ok, I found this: It appears that my loose hose and nipple were marked "n" here.
Still won't start though. Dies right after it catches. One thing I did note is that the MAF sensor is not plugged in. I have a KN cone-type filter that was installed by the previous owner. The MAF was never plugged in and it ran just fine. That does not make sense to me.

Sounds like the owner before you did some srcewing around with wires. You are describing what happends when your AirFlowMeter is not connected. The AFM (where the air fiter goes) lets fuel into the engine. Without the flap inside moving you will never run. I don't see how the thing ran at all. It also has a temperature sensor inside for the air that is going into the intake. Without this it will also run like crap if at all. You need to get a AFM connected and then start troubleshooting.
P.S. the 22RE is not starving for air with the stock box. It is a truck engine made for torque and power under 4k rpm. Throw the aftermarket crap in the garbage. MHO

Yeah, it'll work. Any 4 cyl 22re AFM from 89-95 will work provided that it is functioning correctly. Ohm it out before you put it on if you have the factory service manual handy.
