Exclamation Nasty Vibration while driving: 87 4runner

I am coming to Yotatech once again for its infinite wisdom...

Just as the title says... I have an 87 4runner 22re that has a horrible vibration while driving down the road. It used to only do it at higher speeds (over 70mph at first it seems) but it has progressively gotten worse. I was running late for work the other day and I typically avoid the highway like many other 22re owners do Im sure, and I decided to take it regretfully. Now my 4runner is vibrating AND shaking when accelerating in 1st and 2nd gear, plus seems to be even more sluggish than it was before (didn't know it was possible). I have discovered that it stops vibrating when I let off the gas, and only then. If I push in the clutch and let off the gas it still vibrates, the vehicle has to be in gear and no gas applied for the vibrating to stop while going down the road. Not sure why this is, but it leaves me to believe the cause is not a tire but somehow the engine or drivetrain? Anyone else experience the same problem or have any inclination as to what it might be? On a side note I have noticed a metal sounding clank and rattle when shifting or coasting... don't know if they're related or completely different problems :/

Any experience or suggestions would help!! Thanks again in advance yotatech nation!!

Just going to have to look closely at everything.

Check all the tires for separation. You'll see/feel a huge bump like a tumor on the tread. Also, check for any wheel weights that may have come off. Don't forget to check on the inside of the wheel. This last suggestion is probably not the culprit, but check for it anyway.

Check the drivetrain by hand - looking for loose u-joints; cv joints; and/or loose bolts.

If that doesn't yield anything, make sure the transmission is all tight, and you have good tight motor mounts.

Also, check for leaky or blown shocks.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

U-JOINTS
I tried testing my DS u-joints in the truck and couldn't get any slop. Took it out the u-joints just about fell out.

I second the ujoint(s) being the culprit. Check the shaft for play. If you can mimic the clunking noise you heard by moving around the DS you've found your problem. If the rig has high miles I would replace them anyway even if it isn't causing the vibration.
