Is it my regulator?

My charge and break lights came on while driving and my charge gauge showed just above half way. So I stopped, opened the hood, and with the car running , I gave the alternator a whack with the wrench. The rpm lowered a bit and checking the gauges found the charge/brake lights off and it was charging on the alt gauge again. What do you think..sticking alt brushes or the regulator going? I know the brushes are good. Thanks for any insight.

well, beat me to that answer but yes, when those two lights come on, there is a problem with the charging system.
