Is my Gas consumption normal?

I have 90 toyota pickup with a 22 re, 9 inch lift, 36 inch tires. The fuel meter drops like its a v8. I drove from mcchord air base to kirkland recently and by the time I got back to base i was empty. You can also smell gas coming out the exhaust but the engine was recently rebuilt. Whats going on?

the smell of unburnt gas usually means a fuel leak somewhere external to the engine itself. It could just mean that you are running really rich, especially if you only smell gas from your exhaust. Do you see black smoke coming from your tailpipe? Maybe blue smoke? what are your gears? what does that actually work out to in miles per gallon? If it's actually an engine problem, it could be the injectors sticking open, the fuel pressure regulator being gone, your temp sensor could be bad causing your engine to think its always cold so it dumps more gas... more information is needed.

ok...its only from the exhaust so it must be rich. no smoke at all. gears are 5.88...damn i just figured out that it works out to 8 miles a gallon. thats ridiculous. Im gunna have to take it to a shop or something. What do i do? just tell them to figure out why my gas mileage sucks?

Check the cold start injector to see if it's sticking open. Then replace the o2 sensor. Check fuel pressure if you can. Check to see if your injectors are clean, and not sticking.

You should be getting twice that mileage, even with the 36s.
