I'll be changing out the tranny soon(5spd). Can't make up my mind which one to use. Temps run from -40 to +100 degrees. These are extremes, of course. The average temps probably would be low teens to high 80's. So what do you all recommend? Will also be doing the transfer case(ADD), but a little later. Have developed hard shifting in both boxes after changing out all fluids after I bought the '91 runner last fall. I did replace both both boxes w/a GL4 fluid, but it apparently doesn't like what I used.

I believe MT-90 is the one to use. I put it in mine and it works well.

im using mt-90 and the difference over standard gl4 oil is amazing. The most improvement i've found is that i can actually get it into 2nd without forcing it when the transmission is still cold. I would definately recomend mt-90 it should do perfectly fine in that temperature range.

 

I'm running MT-90 in my 89 and it's awesome. Nice smooth shifting in all gears.

 

MT-90 is the one to use as it is the recomended weight, the MTL is a 70/90 instead of a 75/90. That being said I ran the MTL for over a year in my 00 Runner 5 speed and it was fine, I switched to MT-90 eventually. If you are simply switching for smoother shifts you may be disappointed, many rave but I really noticed no difference over Mobil1.

 

I just switched to MT-90 and I was not disappointed. I'd run the M1 for several years and had noticed an eventual decrease in the ease of shifting. It wasn't that the MT-90 made a stupendously miraculous difference all around, but the shifting from certain gears is definitely smoother. The fact that the synchros ARE lining up better in those gears was enough to merit the switch. But then I do have a high mileage vehicle with 210k.

Regardless, trying the MT-90 will not hurt one bit. And if you are not impressed, you can always try something else next time.

 

I have been running redline mtl for more than 10 years in my '94 and have loved the benefits. Are you all saying the mt-90 is better than the mtl in a toyota 5 speed?

 

everyone says mix mtl and mt-90, but don't do it.

Either full mt90 or lightweight shockproof. I ran heavy shockproof in a turbo beast I had and that stuff was AMAZING (but thick like molasses when cold).

I'd say for trail stuff, mix mt90 and lightweight shockproof.

I decided to put some MT-90 in my tranny and transfer based on what I'd read here. I'm a little disappointed to say that I can feel no difference in my shifting. I recently bought the truck so I don't know what was in there before, but whatever it was, it was just as good as the MT-90. Now whether the MT-90 protects better I have no way of telling, but as far as shifting I didn't experience the miraculous change that some had experienced after switching.

 

Ah, your shifter seat bushing may be shot. No gear oil will fix that.
