mpg going up..... strange.

Ok I bought this thing about 2 months ago with a rough idle, first tank was about 16mpg (22re, 5 speed, 4.10's and 28" stock tires). I got the idle fixed, it turned out to be a 3$ gasket after I fixed all kinds of other stuff, and the mpg went up to 18 on the next tank. The tank after that was 21mpg and the one I'm on now I've got 200 miles on half a tank (about 6 gallons). Does the ecu "learn" after a repair and code clear?

Make no mistake, I'm not complaining.... just wondering.

This is all in town driving back and forth to work.

Thanks cats.

Did a large portion of your truck fall off and you didn't notice?? That's really good mileage. ECUs do "learn", and that might be part of it.

That might have been part of the problem. It had a half tank in it and had been sitting in the New Mexico sun for quite a while.

yes they do learn, and yes aerodynamics have a large impact, but you cant guestimate gas mileage based on the gas gauge, its not that accurate or consistant.

Almost all vehicles get better gas mileage this time of year for a few reasons among others:

1. Winter gas additives are gone.
2. No more exteme cold starts / engine warms up quicker along with other fluids.
3. Tires could have more pressure due to warmer temps...

These reasons could be playing an additional part in the mileage

A guy at work had an 87 EFI and he let me borrow it--320k on the odo and it was still getting MPG in the upper twenties.

So your case seems to still be subpar. maybe a couple more weeks are it will be up to speed.

Upper twenties? Are you talking about a 2WD truck because if you are thats pretty obtainable. Apparently my brothers 92 2WD gets 25-27 MPG. 18-20 sems pretty typical on 22R-E 4WD's.

I got 273 miles out of 3/4 a tank and that fuel gauge was really moving near the end there. Strange how it moves so much faster after the first half. I filled up today and ran the numbers and I got 22 out of this tank. Not bad for all in town driving. I can live with 22mpg on a 22 year old truck with 174K on it.

I keep hoping for better but so far this one gets better milage than the 2000 4runner (auto, v6) and the 1997 Avalon my (soon to be) ex-wife drives. If I'd have known that Toyotas were capable of this kind of milage at this age I would've never started driving Fords.

I don't understand this one at all...... what is "summer" gas? All I've ever used was the cheapest thing I can find at the pump, no matter the season.

You never answered my above post regarding if we're talking 2WD or 4WD models.

It's a very nice feature the learning ECU.

When i removed my CAT. and muffler it was about 2 tanks later that my milage went up from 20 to 23MPG highway. then when i got the 265x75 @42PSI about 1 tank later i got 25MPG. thank god for a smart ECU.

twenties is no subpar for any 4x4 truck IMO. Especially one that is over 20 years old.

The truck i drove was a 2wd, 5Spd extended cab. I am still just surprised at that little 22r motor--especially the EFI ones--they really are the energizer bunny and MPG's are great. Only sore spot is the Timing chain!!
