Motor Oil

ive been using 20w-50 castrol oil in my 22re.. since the day i got it.. the one time i ran 10w-30 it burned off faster than you can say ow. i agree with everyone here, if what you're using works, then stay with it. if your truck burns oil like mine does, (not surprising considering it has 250,000 miles on it and the owner before me was a putz, only changed his oil once every 6 months whether it needed it or not), then id try 20w-50. i tried 30w, but that was WAAY too heavy. then again i live in vegas, where its hot as heck, maybe you should try putting 3 quarts of regular weight oil in and like 1.5 quarts of 20w-50. again: only do this if you burn oil a lot. any thoughts?

Melting the engine. I'll try the synthetic next and maybe 15w-40 for the summer time and will go back to 10w-40 on the winter. A buddy told me that he uses 20w -50 on all his car's and said that when the engine run at it high temp. the oil will be as it is running on 10w -30 and may reduce the heat or is he bullsiting me?... Thanks alot. I'll just stick on what I am using for now.

You should poke your head out of the dark ages and look around a little sometime.
mobil one is a great oil and is what i would run if i could afford it. however i dont need to being that i change my oil every 3000 miles anyway.
a tranny cooler would help, because the antifreeze that runs through the radiator then through another one, just smaller, and cools the transmission, which then would help to keep temperatures lower. for ex. if you put beers in an icechest that are hot with ice they will cool off. if you eliminate extra heat in other areas you can help make things easier to cool elsewhere. tim.

If you can't say anything based on fact (on this forum of "no misinformation"), then don't say anything at all......
Now Fram, you're right on. The Fram filters are lower than whale turds on the bottom of the ocean. Pure crap.

Fact: the oil ran in my dad's stock z71 changed 700 miles before on it came out looking VERY dirty. BLACK. acdelco oil filter. thats my observations, and was just a recent event that seals my evidence in that penzoil is not a very good motor oil to use IMHO.

Antifreeze does not run through a transmission cooler. ATF does. Therefore, the ONLY thing that a tranny cooler helps is the transmission....which is definitely a good thing. Just has nothing to do with the overly concerned OP's question.....which is about the motor. Which has been amazingly derailed....

If you try a different brand of oil & it turns black very quickly, the PROBABLY means it has a high level of detergent & is cleaning the sludge out of your engine....

best way to clean out your engine. if its dirty, i change my oil every 1000 miles. im still trying to clean out the engine from that roll, its still dirty from it. word of advice... try not to roll a toyota... i dont think they appreciate it much

Either that or one did not get a substantial amount of the previous oil out.....like from draining when it's cold or on unlevel ground.

Yup, one or both are most likely correct.
Pennzoil is one of the better of the oils for certain.

How did I miss this thread?
I've got a reman 22RE in my truck with maybe 10,000 miles on it now. My owner's manual says to run 10W-30 in temps above 40* or something. I've run 5W-30 year round in my Nissan and Isuzu for years with great results.
Since my engine is new I made the switch to synthetic and I'm running Royal Purple 10W-40 which I'll change in January and July. I'm also using the Toyota oil filters which I change January, April, July, and October no matter what the mileage. (I have a 5 mile round trip every day). So my costs are the same as 4 conventional oil changes. Next year I may switch to 10W-30, but I don't understand why Toyota recommends 10W-30 in the first place. It just means I have to stock two different oils.
Now believe me, friends don't let friends run FRAM filters. Go to NAPA and see their display where they cut open a WIX filter and FRAM filter. Simply no comparison, the FRAM was no where near as good. That is what finally made me switch to a better filter. I run WIX on my Isuzu Trooper and Toyota on my truck.
Hope my $0.02 helps.
