Milky way.

Hi, So my 89 22re had a water in the oil. I hardly use my truck maybe once a week for dumping trash. My ride to the transfer station is probably 5 miles round trip, and flat no hills.
Today i went to start it and it had a long start then smoke and rough revs. After that smooth revs.
So I drained oil and coolants and in the process of removing engine from my truck oh it has 234k miles. What should i replace and upgrade since its out.
I will do the usual timing chain, water pump ect. But should i do the whole bottom half cams. Let me know your opinions. Thanks

Sounds like a head gasket issue. As you said for sure the Timing chain and all the seals and gaskets. There's no easier time than now. You could honestly probably just get away with doing a head gasket job and be fine. Inspect the cylinder walls while its out. Any deep scoring in it then you should do a full rebuild. Since there was coolant in the oil and no telling how long its been that way it would be a good idea to pull the crank and rod bearings and inspect them. If they look worn but he journals all look good then you can probably get away with just replacing the bearings. If its just a trash hauling truck then its probably not worth the time and money going into full blown detailed rebuild. If it ran good before then just the essentials and a head gasket will probably be fine. Closely inspect the head for cracks and flatness. Check the block deck for flatness too. Make sure none of the valve seats sunk and the valve guides are good. Look around and see if there is anything that caused it to over heat or something. There's nothing worse than to do a bunch of time consuming and expensive work just to have it happen again.

Red face

With coolant in the oil just how high was the level on the dip stick?

Antifreeze destroys the bearings so the bottom end might be gone depending how long it was run

Thanks Kolton, I will inspect the block and pistons walls. It was running fine all this time and it never overheated because, it's a short run to the transfer station. I can't figure out how it happened. Thanks again.

Wyoming9, I didn't run the truck more than 5 miles since i found the problem. I hope i can get the engine out tomorrow so i can figure out what i'm doing with it. If the weather allows me too. More Hurricanes on the way to Hawaii. Aloha
