Metallic noise in clutch or transmission

I been getting a noise that progressively getting worst. So I found neutral in my transfer case and walked through the gears a couple times. In neutral clutch engaged or not no difference and no noise. First faint noise, second a little more audible, third getting noisy, fourth not much difference than third, fifth very whirly and metallic. I am worried that it is my transmission.

Hey sechott, I am having a problem that sounds similar to yours, check out my link and scroll to the bottom and watch the video I posted. Does your "noise" sound like that?? I am in the process of finding out what that "noise" is and I'll let you know if I figure it out, if you'd like.

Cheers.

Sounds a lot like what mine is doing, have you ruled the clutch out? I won't be able to work on it till spring, I will be replacing clutch and components. Also I will take the tranny out and inspect it.

If there's a screechy, almost grinding noise coming from the transmission when in neutral, clutch's engaged( pedal out) and engine running - it's probably the pilot bearing. Noise with the clutch disengaged( pedal in) and in neutral - it's the throw-out bearing. Noise in all gears including 5th - input shaft bearing. NOISE IN ONLY 4TH AND 5TH GEAR will be a counter-shaft bearing, this would hold true due to the fact when you reach 4th gear the input and and main(output) shafts lock together resulting in direct drive, the counter-shaft then stops spinning but still free wheels on a bearing, 1st thru 3rd the counter-shaft is in mesh with the input shaft. Possible noises will include gear clash and other frictional contact with components, but nine out of ten, your bearings are the culprit. If noise occurs when clutch is engaged/disengaged, throw-out bearing will be the fault. I realize this a lot of info but trying to help narrow down your results. I have a slight grinding, metallic screech in first thru 2nd, but then goes away in 3rd and so on, pretty sure it's the input shaft bearing

From your info it indicates the counter shaft thanks for the reply. Still hoping for the clutch being the problem. I will find out after winter.

Spray some lube on your U-joint just to see if that might be the problem. I had been getting a metal-on-metal grinding noise under load (esp in while accelerating in 5th gear) and narrowed it down to a worn and dry U-joint.

Update

Turns out to be the the exhaust clamp bolts were backing off, I tightened them and fixed the noise.
