Unhappy Maybe I'm stupid.

I am a farelly new toyota 4runner owner.

All I want to do is add some tranny fluid. The problem is I can find where to put it. I have looked all over and I know I am probably being a dumbass. If anyone has a diagram that can point it out to me. I would really appreciate it.

It should be on the side of the manual tranny. Is there a reason you want to add fluid?

His sig says he has a 5-speed. As far as I know there is no dipstick on the manual trannies.

No dipstik. There's a bolt on the driver's side, sits about halfway up the side of the transmission, where you refill. You're also supposed to get a new washer for that bolt whenever you do this.

The reason I was wanting to add fluid is because the previous owner had let it sit for like three years. I suspect it is low on fluid because the tranny gets very hot if I drive a long distance and I can feel my acceleration decrease when the tranny heats up. So for those reasons I am suspect that it is low on fluid and adding fluid would lubricate the tranny fixing the problem.

Thank You for all your advice.

I've never replaced my washer....never any problems.

Now, why do you want to add tranny fluid? Is it low? You wouldn't know that unless you knew where the fill plug is.

BTW, manual transmissions use gear oil not tranny fluid. I'm really not tryin' to be a smart ass or insult you, but you read all kinds of mistakes people have made on forums. Just wouldn't want you to make that one.

EDIT: My god, man....were you reading my mind? Unless it's leaking, there's no reason for the lube to be low. It may need changing, though. (Or, duh, if it was low when it was parked.)

Thanks, That would have been unfortunate. I just had the clutch replaced completely. Flywheel and all. So maybe I am wrong about the tranny all together.

Any Advice!!!!!!

Stick your finger in the fill hole and see if you can touch fluid. If not add some until you can. I'm a big fan of the Lucas tranny additive. You can pick it up at your local parts store.

Since you don't know when the transmission oil was changed last time, I'd suggest just changing it instead of refilling.

Mmmmm...maybe.

Who replaced the clutch? Don't suppose they drained the tranny to do the clutch, do ya?

Thats what I suspect, but it was a really good mechanic and I don't think he would have forgot to add new oil/fluid.

I guess that I will just have to take out the bolt and find out if there is any fluid.

So I need oil and not tranny fluid?

I didn't mean that he left it empty, just that he may have drained it and refilled with either the old or new. One would hope new....

Gear oil. Search Redline MT-90. It's good stuff...I like it. Others will have their suggestions, too.

Yes you will need gear oil. My transmission, Tcase, and both differentials take 75W-90 gear oil, your may be different, it will tell you in your owners manual, or if not im sure somebody on here knows. I would stick your finger in the fill/test hole first to see if its low, just so you can tell if that was a problem in the first place. Then drain and refill it.

Back to the other problem.....
If your trans. is low enough to create driveability issues you'd likely have shifting problems, gear grinding, and such. I think you've got something else going on entirely unrelated to the transmission.

Were you having problems accelerating before the new clutch?

Some manual trannies do use ATF, however i havent heard of any toyota trannies that do. MT90 is deffinately worth the money if you're looking to change it. pull the plug, and see what the level is. when the oil is warm it should just slightly drip out of the fill hole, otherwise it will need atleast to be topped up.
