Manual Hubs question...I think mine may be broken

I just aquired the 86 4runner I previously posted about. I drove about 700 miles to get it and it was a long trip home. I made it about half way home when the clutch pedal fell to the floor. Pressure plate went out. So I spent the next day laying in the dirt putting in a new clutch with borrowed tools. Then the Charge light came on. I got it all the way home before the battery completely drained. So I took the altenator off to get rebuilt and the bracket was broken. Had to spend the next two hours digging through the junk yard to find a bracket I could rig up to work. It also needs new front cv's, which clack badly in 4WD. All of this from a vehicle described on ebay as everything working properly.

Sorry about the long rant. My question is about the hubs, which also appear to be broken. I notice that four wheel drive works when the hubs are set to "Free". Also the passenger side hub won't turn all of the way to "Lock". Only about half way. It would seem that the hubs aren't freewhelling. Any idea on this? Also, did this come from the factory with manual hubs?

Those hubs can get sticky. Take them off and rebuild them. It's a pretty easy job to do.

Agreed...take them off, get new gaskets, new bearing grease, degreaser, a toothbrush, and have fun! They take me all of 5 minutes to get them all the way apart.

mine did that you need to take the cap off and rotate it 180 degrees and make sure the clip with the teeth is in correctly

Fixed it

When I took it the handle off, I took note of its position. According to my Haynes manual it was on wrong. I put it on in the proper position and it now works fine. Apparently the po is more of a moron than i previously suspected. He also overfilled the oil for me among other things.
