it could be lots of things like your iginitor could be going out the cold start injector could be on its way out why you smell gas it could be dumping it in the cylinders and flooding it out you just need to check to see if you have any codes its something to do with you ignition cause if you smell gas something is not firing right away and what happend to me when i smelt gas was when my iginitor went out it would just cran and crank never turned over it was just dumping fuel in and it was a very strong smell and if its your iginitor it will go out on you at the worst time mine went out on me going 40mph down a busy road.i dont know what motor you have but here is some troubleshooting for you the first one is for the 22re=>http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1993/engine/3troubles.pdf the next one is for the 3.0=>http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1993/engine/63troubles.pdf

I had this exact issue with my truck (1986 and a 22re motor) and it turned out that one of the little "O" rings on one of the injectors had failed. It would spray a little fuel out while it was running, thus the gas smell, and then wouldn't keep pressure when it sat for a little while, thus it'd take several cranks to fire back up.
Hope this helps.

If the other things don't work check your fuel pressure regulator. It can cause the problem you describe. Pull the vacuum line off it, If there is gas in the line the diaphragm in the regulator is bad. If not a fuel press. check is next.

Or is the truck already at the dealership?

[QUOTE=Junkers88;51053839]Are you sure you don't have time to do it yourself? Taking the intake plenum off takes less than an hour, the fuel rail for the injectors only has one bolt on it and it's easy as pie to remove once the plenum is out of the way.

i would do it my self but the the fuel rail under the intake manifold is leaking and it takes a bit to fix it. the dealer called me today and said the fuel rail was broken under the intake manifold. the guy said he will charge me 200 to do everything. and plus with school and work i have no time. im driving my 05 tacoma right now
