Keeps popping out of third gear!

My 86 fourrunner keeps popping out of third gear. Dont have any problems with other gears. Is this a popular problem? And if i start looking for anouther transmission, what years can i pull one from? Thanks...

Why not look into rebuilding the one you have? If you put a used one in then you run the risk of having further issues. Check around on prices for a rebuild. It might be a simple issue to fix.. i am sure someone with similar problems will speak up

If its an efi its a w56 the same years are 86-88 4runner or pickup. If carbed which its probably not, a g52 from 84-88. The w has shift hub problems and the g had shift fork problems. My advice is if you want to go with a g series rebuild it the internals can be questionable used or may only last a short while. W I'd try used but expect 5th gear whine unless you rebuild it. I get 795 for my hd w56 or 695 for a g series

I do want to go through it and fix this. But i drive this everyday. So i feel i need to take the chance on anouther one while i rebuild this one. Im just not sure of all years that i could possibly use one from. But im currently trying to find info & prices on fixing this. If it can be a weekend fix then i will try it.

It is a w56 transmission. Im looking into fixing it & calling around for one now. But no luck so far. As far as it popping out of third gear. This is surely a shift hub problem correct?

It sounds like a shifter bushing problem. Before I spent money on rebuilding the transmission, I would install a shifter bushing kit from Marlin for a few dollars and see if that fixes the problem. This is a simple job for someone who can use hand tools.

if you end up having to go the tranny route, you can get a GOOD rebuilt from MarlinCrawler also.

If it was just a shifter bushing then you would be able to hold it in. IF not then in you go. The bad part is last time I ordered a w from marlin they didn't have any cores and wanted to build mine and take three weeks. Walking for three weeks is not a option. It can be done in a weekend but not if this is your first time with a w. I do keep w-56's in stock but I understand wanting to do it yourself. If you take a crack at it give me a call and i'll help you out

I rebuilt the 5 speed in my 82 a while back and its given me no problems since. Used the Marlin rebuild kit. We took it out on Sat and rebuilt it that day and put it back in on Sunday morning. But we have done quite a bit of work on alot of different things. Could be done on a weekend though. Even take it out Friday night and get right at it Sat then you have a full weekend just to work on the thing. Its not that bad. The FSM helps alot.

almost 99% certain its your shifter seat and bushing. Very common problem. Sounds like alot of rebuild-happy people here....

I 'll check out this shifter seat & bushing thing. But when driving it to work i had a real hard time getting it to go in 3rd. Just kept poping out 75% of the time, even had grinding noise also at times. This proberly made some peaple think i couldnt drive, lol. But i did find anouther W56 thats even still got its t-case bolted to it for $75. The guy says it shifted good but it did come out of a wrecked 87 pickup (been hit at left front corner). He said that if it didnt shift good bring it back for refund. I did meet the guy & he didnt seem shady, but? Im really am thinking of grabbing it & trying. But if my problem is in the trans i still want to go through it. The junk & replace thing my friends do dont teach you anything. And i like learning/knowing how to do things.

When i drove it back home i tried holding it in. Well it didnt really like that at all. It would grind & wanna kick back most of the time. So i would just keep trying easily and it would finally stay. I still believe its in the trans. Are there any good manuals out there for these trans? And if so where can i find them? Thanks
