Just a FYI day...Tune ups done right help.
So back in Oct. I get a 89 sr5 4runner.Picked it up cheap($600 with only 160,000 miles) because the engine made tons of noise and seemed to leak alot of oil from the valvecovers, oilpan ,etc. Well I have been driving it here and there since then after a good engine cleaning to try and locate the leaks, and after doing a not so recommeded tighing of the valvecover bolts, oil pan bolts, etc the leaks slowed to a very slow drip here and there, but the awful noise was still there so after throwing some miles on it I noticed the MPG was terrible and the lack of even the little bit of power the 3.0 has just wasnt there, so I decided to do a tune-up on it and boy the mess I found was awsome.
First off the rotor was "fixed?" with a screwed on new tip for a contact point..Yeah made me laugh also.
secondly....4 of the 6 plugs were not seated inth the cylinders..meaning they were about half way in the plug holes(is this the idiot way of indexing plugs?)
and lastly and what I find to be super funny was the thermostate was gutted (so there was my OD problem and lack of a decent idle) and timming was set to 15 deg. adv.
after gapping the plugs and installing them into the cylinders all the way, putting in a thermostate, new cap and rotor, setting the timming back to 10 deg. adv. you couldnt believe the improvement, it like a new meachine and while not as quick as the 97 with the larger and more powerfull 3.4 she can hang the hi-way no with the A/C on(which it next on the to-do list) and hits OD like it should. I guess what im saying is I should have did this about 5 months ago and not thought a complete rebuild was due as now the little 3.0 purrs like a ticky kitten...I guess she will make until Oct. before the rebuild..
