Jumper Wire for A/C Recharge with R12?

Before I got this 93 pickup I had a Ford Probe that used R12 for A/C refrigerant as well. To recharge on that vehicle you just had to hook up a hose to the low pressure side of the system and unplug a connector which controlled when the compressor kicked on and off. Once you had the connector loose you would use a short jumper wire to trick the system into running and it would pull all the R12 it needed out of the bottle. I have a bunch of R12 cans that I got from my wife's grandmother so that isn't an issue. And I have the hose to hook up to the bottle. I just don't know if I need to use a jumper wire on the Toyota truck like I did on the Ford Probe.

Who's done it?
