so, my truck had some serious idling issues since i bought it last december. i've spent the last year trying to solve it, and every time i've hit a dead end i'd take it to the stealership. basically after nearly $4k and being WAY to broke to pay tuition i randomly me a guy who's a nascar mech. anyway, he checked things out for me.....

he found that both of the valve cover gaskets were cracked, the timing chain was off by 12 degrees and the cam in the right head was off by a tooth. so we fixed these problems and as we were putting the right valve cover back on he noticed that there was a bolt missing on the steering column, so we took care of that to.

finally, my truck purs like a little kitty!

here's what work was done:

valve cover gaskets
loose steering fixed
dropped oilpan and flushed everthing
fixed timing chain and cam

so for all of this work i he wanted $500 for his time. i ended up giving him $700 and i think it was well worth the money.....what do ya'll think?

 

so the stealer didnt/couldnt fix it?

 

no i honestly think that they could have......its just that i don't have another year of my life, let alone anymore $$$, to be wasting my time with people who could care less and don't value the knowledge that i have about MY own truck.

naw he's a real good guy, knowledgeable on all makes. plus his shop has a contract w/ the PD and all city vehicles for maintenance.

 

90 bucks an hour at the stealership? thats good! out here the stealership charges 150 an hour. 90 an hour is for any typical shop

 

oh no they charge more than ninety here too.....it's about 130 or so. but the good news is she runs perfectly now....just took some tlc!

where can i find an "honest" mechanic?

A farmer is your best bet for an honest mechanic....
Speaking from experience of course!

 

One of the few mechanics I trust works out of his house. Has a moustache and listnins to late 60's rock.

 

well the guy i'm talking about is in cloverdale, CA. i know that's pretty far from you.
