Intermittent high idle

I feel like a noob for posting this up but it's happening more often these days.

During normal driving (hot or cold), sometimes my idle will settle at about 1500 RPMs. My gas pedal is not stuck - I check each time. It happens usually when I'm coming to a stoplight and put the clutch in -the tach just coasts down to 2500, 2000, 1500, then stays there. A quick blip on my accelerator seems to return it to normal idle every time (works the first time when I do that.

I'm not seeing any performance or safety issues with this but it's happening more often than ever before (noticed it years ago for the first time).

Any idea what this could be and how to remedy?

Thanks!

I know very little about the 22RE EFI setup but I'd suggest checking your TPS. It might have some weird intermittent issue affecting your idle, such as a dodgy connector.

Philbert - I have the exact same problem, and I'm glad you posted it. I have been trying to get mine to do it consistently so I can understand it better. Everytime it happens, a little blip to the throttle fixes it. I have adjusted my TPS, so I don't really suspect it right now. My IACV does not work ( I don't have a cold idle at all), so maybe they are related but I don't really see how. I originally thought it was the dashpot, so I removed it and still have the problem. So now I am down to 2 possible culprits:

1. Sticking accelerator cable, maybe it binds up somewhere inside the sheath.

2. Throttle body: I read another post about a guy who's throttle plate wouldn't quite close properly because I guess the neck of the TB was worn. I believe he replaced the whole TB.

Not sure what else it could be, truck runs great otherwise, just has this occasional sticky idle.

Thanks Cory -sounds like I'm not alone.

I have some graphite so maybe I'll try getting that into my throttel cable sheath and see if that helps.

Also been meaning to clean out my TB/intake anyway - is spraying carb cleaner into it and running it a bad thing to do? I've been reading up here on the Seafoam treatment too, which I may just do. I recall seeing some black stuff inside the intake mani when I tore things down for my timing chain job - looked like black crud/soot.

Phil

I think you want to be careful about spraying right into the TB, might be better to spray onto a rag and wipe. I'm going to get in there with an old tooth brush and make sure there is nothing making it stick. I did the Seafoam not too long ago, but it goes in after your throttle body, through a vac line, so it's not going to do anything for the TB. Good idea on the graphite, maybe I'll pick some up and try to get it into the sheath. Guess I haven't really checked to see if the gas pedal itself is binding up on anything, but I know it's not floor mats!

I haven't yet had a chance to use Corey's advice- and the issue still exists

Will report back soon when I do try it out...PROMISE!

i had the same issue. had. i had capped off the reed/pair valve. once i put a filter back on in place of the cap, the idle became normal. that's my story, so i don't know if this is your case or not, but i hope it'll help

found some graphite at the hardware store in town for only $3.80 for a pretty big bottle, maybe 4 oz I think? I was paying like $10 for a tiny bottle thru a gun parts supplier, what a ripoff....

Might want to check your dash pot as well. If it gets clogged it can cause these same problems.

X2 on the dash pot, they can get sticky, I have put some all in one oil on the part of the dash pot that comes into contact with the plunger or what ever you call it...haven't had any problems since

just engine dirt and grease in general. i haven't cleaned mine, and i don't think it ever has been, yet it works just fine. it's easy enough to take apart to look at. there's a "lid" opposite the throttle contact that you pry off. the filter is in there
