Infant car seat in 88 ext cab..can I add the LATCH anchors?
Hello all,
Just bought my dream truck. 88 ext cab w/22RE and 5 spd long bed !!! Finally!!!!
Having motor work all done and then getting AC fixed and truck detailed.
I'm looking to put a car seat up front with me and want it VERY secure. All of our newer cars have the LATCH system or old school lap belts, these make car seat installation pretty easy to secure a seat very well.
On the 88 Toyota trucks they have 3 point standard shoulder seat belts which don't "lock in" enough for my peace of mind.
Is there any way to add anchors for the car seat LATCH connections? There is a toyota part number 73709-12010 for ONE anchor but I can't tell if it's an upper or the lowers (there should be 3 total anchors for the proper installation). I also cannot tell if it is even compatible with an 88 pickup.
Any advice or experience with infant seats would be much appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Donnie

I saw a thread online where guy took two 6 inch long lag type bolts with eyelets on the ends and put them through the floor pan with all grade 8 hardware and grade 8 washers on either side to distribute the load.
It seems as though the factory seatbelt mounting points are always mounted through the floor board and NOT the frame so I'm going to keep researching and see if the above idea will suffice.
The 'DIY' method above isn't my preferred method...the reason for my post is that I've seen a toyota part number # 73709-12010 that is supposedly for ALL toyota vehicles 2000 model year and older. It is supposed to be an anchor that bolts into a pre-drilled specific application threaded hole for these "anchor kits" that are for child car seats.

There are many ways you can make the latch anchors. Definitely want them body mounted like a seat or seatbelt, never frame mounted - because body and frame move independently in big accidents. I could see anchors being used such as what you described, ubolts through floor, custom bracketry, maybe something off the seat mounts since many 2nd row seats latch is part of the seat frame. I'm actually planning to do the LATCH addition on my Oldsmobile, so my kids can ride "more" safely.

Yeah I just don't like the idea of clipping the shoulder to the lap strap and then buckling it "through" the car seat. With LATCH I can get his seat in our other cars and it won't move more than an inch when you yank on it if that makes sense.
