Im planing to buy 5.29 gears front and rear. (ifs) I dont wheel that much but i want to run 35 cuz i have the clearance and still like to mess around. how much am i looking at for gears and install kits front and rear. I have a mechanic at a friends shop is a friend of mine, hes never done gears but he said he will give it a shot. How much would i be looking at for paying him for labor. I have a good amount of automotive knowledge but im not sure if i can tackle this.

 

hes never done gears before? Ide have soeone else do it than. Not being a jerk..but gears are the main part of your dirveline. If they arent set PERFECT....problems will arise to say the least

 

Zero, actually he should pay you. He should consider it tuition to the college of hard knocks.

 

Yeah, get someone else to do it. If he's off by the slightest hair, it could mean the difference between 100,000 miles of use, and 100 miles.

 

If you can be patient you can find these on the used market when people go SAS.

I got a complete front w/ 4.88s and a Truetrac for $100 off craigslist last fall. I put new seals in it, otherwise, nothing.

Contrawise when the factory bolts in the rear truetrack backed out and wiped out the entire rear chunk (R&P, TT, Bearings, one axle and the chunk itself) it cost $1200 to repair.
This was a clear defect from Eaton yet they didn't stand behind their flaws and I had to eat the whole thing.



Plenty of used stuff on the market

 

pay him nothing to figure it out...and then when it blows...thats when you'll be payin a hell of alot more to get it back on the road.

...or you can just pay what it costs get ZUK to set em up for ya...and not worry about it after. im sure he's got spare 3rds layin around that you could use and send yours back for cores...

some things you can mickey mouse...gears aint one of em.

Like everyone else has pointed out, gears are one thing you want a experianced person working on.

The last thing you need is the gears grinding up and locking up on the hwy.

 

Besides, an experienced guy can do it in an amaziningly short amount of time, and do it right. If you, or someone else who has never done it, will probably spend a day of too beating your head against a wall trying to get it right, then give up and take it to a shop anyway. That's been my and my friends experience.

 

how much is average labor for the install front and rear. wheres a good place to get gears. I missed a really good opportunity for a front diff 5.29 with 5.29 and a lock rite, i can only pray another comes along.

 

I just bought some 5.29s with master install kit front and rear from Jawsgear.com and they were $504! A 4x4 shop here in Laffayette told me $330 for the rear and $440 for the front for labor! im not sure how good of a deal it is cause im new to this game but just something for you to compare!

 

i paid cdn $200 per diff for mine. that included an arb installed up front. i provided the 3rds, gears, and install kits. couple weeks later they were done and i swapped em in. wicked deal if you ask me. you want to get someone that knows gears in their sleep.

shop time usually is about 5 or so hours per. do your wallet a favour, and look for some used factory 4.88's and be done with it. if you dont wheel it, dont bother spending the money to put in new gears. it might be a bit of a dog w/ 35's on a 22re...but thats just the price you'll pay...

 

Is the brand quality really that big of a difference. Like motive gear, and Yukon.

 

If i do take it to a shop ill end up taking the 3rds out. tell me more about the factory 4.88s.

 

Considering running a search, guy. There's already a lot of info on brands and whatnot. The factory 4.88's.....they're Toyota, of course. But, the thing of it is... the carriers are designed to only accept the factory 4.88 gear sets. Meaning, you cannot regear to anything else. You must buy yet another carrier along with another gear set.

 

i wouldnt mess with yukons! any 4x4 shop will tell you thats a cheaper brand and they break! Motive and Precision are both a good brand but IMO motive is the best buy as far as money to quality! if you have the extra money go with precision!
