if i am correct, you could touch the leads to either terminal and the light will turn on.
Just be sure the "light off" button is not clicked. I almost tore my dash apart when I installed mine becuase I didn't check that button first.

btw Toyota does make a harness that is plug and play for the inclinometer lighting. Goes between the wiring.
*edit* Found a pic:
They are only $15 or so, but very hard to find. According to my Local Toyota dealer, I got the last new one in the US. That may or may not be true, so check with your local dealer.
