Im new in the toyota world. HELP

I bought a 1989 Toyota pickup 2wd with the 22r for $750. When I purchased the old girl, she was spitting and sputtering. The previous owner was frustrated with it he had put a new Ignition module, plugs, wire, cap and rotor on it. I drove it 6 miles home. I checked the timing and the distributor was off one tooth, now it she will purr and be in time for 30 seconds and then the timing becomes erratic -10 to +10. any advice would be greatly appreciated. still missing bad except for the 30 seconds of happiness. Thanks all

Is this when idleing? If so, check you TPS. It might be out of whack.

Any check engine lights?

It can't be a TPS... it's carbureted. Anyways, have you checked that the cam sprocket is pointing at 12 o'clock when the engine is at tdc?

Sometimes I don't bother reading everything.

I thought originally it was timing. it still may be. i have not checked the sprocket yet but I took some carb cleaner and sprayed some of the jets and it stabilized a little. it still has no power and still idles rough. I considered rebuilding the carb, but i can see that not ending well.

I recently bought an 89 as well. I had similar problems. I ended up just desmogging and going with the weber carb. I also had to replace the timing chain and it's related components. Now it runs awesome. Here is a great thread that may help you: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114...torial-264405/
