ignition timing issue
im trying to get my timing to 10 btdc. ive followed the steps i have found by searching the forums. im jumping the the terminals and checking with the timing light and its hitting plenty before 15 btdc and that is with the distributor all the way adjusted. going the other way makes it worse.
ive tried pulling the distributor out with the crank at 0 and cylinder 1 in compression and re-aligning the "notches" on the dristibutor driven gear like the manual says too. but still there is no improvement. is there anything im doing wrong? or anyone ran into same problem?
thanks

before top dead center means the spark is occurring before the cylinder hits the TDC position. This allows a better ignition of the fuel/air mixture. If you are 15 or or before TDC, then the spark is occurring too soon. I would make sure the timing chain is position correctly. Being a little off like you are may be a jumped link. How old is your timing chain and have you ensured that the cam is at the right position when the crank is at TDC?

i have the 3vze so its the timing belt. and when i reinstalled the timing belt i made sure all the marks line up properly with the cam gears. the mechanic who put the new timing belt on it before i owned it actually was the one who came helped me do it. so im pretty sure that its right.

timing should be really simple. as long as the cams are lined to the crank, then the only thing to change is the orientation of the distributor. a single tooth in the distributor can make the difference. can you try compensating; i mean put in the distributor turned more in one direction as you insert it to compensate.

thats what i originally thought when i started. so maybe instead of aligning mark on driven gear with housing go one tooth over? now if its hitting near 15* would i go one tooth over clock wise or counter clockwise on driven gear?

So leaving the timing belt the way it currently is. Turn the distributor with the engine on and see which way (clockwise or counter) causes the timing mark to change towards the 10 TDC mark. Then pull the distributor, put engine back to TDC, and reinsert the distributor with more compensation. Should be a quick test right?

One more thing: this is a link to the Toyota FSM for the 3VZ and how to install and time it.

ok just did that and oh buy that was way worse! haha
and yes it ran pretty good before but had no power at all and a little bit of a ping.
ill check out the fsm again but that what i followed to begin with

well i put the distributor back to where it was when i originally started so its firing at just before 15 btdc and idling around 1500.
im thinkin maybe because im getting the cel code 41, that the tps needs to be properly adjusted before i can get the timing correct? idk thats just my guess what you guys think? if thats the case i think im just gonna have the mechanic by my work look it over on monday if i can figure it out. any thought or input is greatly appreciated.

Read the fsm. As Gnarly said the idle is too high - it needs to be at 800 to set the timing. Make sure IDL grounds to E2 on the TPS when throttle is closed. After bringing idle speed down, clear your codes and see if any come back.

Yes yes. 1500 is way too high. Bridge your connectors and bring your RPMs to 750-800. That alone may help your timing a bit.
You should be able to turn the distributor counter clockwise a tad and fix the issue. I'm kinda confused about the difficulty.

so come to find out it is quit amazing what ACTUALLY pluggin in your TPS will do for ya! looked at it today and realized that my tps wasnt plugged in ( i know... i know... what an idiot haha) once that was plugged in the timing was about right and able to be fine adjusted and no more cel codes! this officialy wraps up the head gasket swap and she should be ready to rock and roll (hopefully for atleast another 50,000).
im so glad to now have a working 4runner... now time for the upgrades! but where to start... hmmm?

I have to bring this back up. I have the same issue and my TPS is definitely plugged in and my idle is set to 800 but I cant turn the distributor anymore in the direction i need to in order to be at 10*. Will moving a tooth on the dist gear cause any harm?
