IFS Re-gear - Carrier side shim issue

I have a '91 pickup v6 and I decided to regear it to 4.88's. Rear is already done and I had an extra front diff laying around the shop. A mechanic buddy of mine is helping me under the table get this done. He pulled everything apart and installed the new Nitro bearings kit and Nitro ring and pinion but when he reused the old carrier side shims to adjust the backlash he ended up getting 0.00" for the backlash.

I ordered a Nitro side carrier shim kit but it comes with 12 different shims, that has several .020" and down to .010". It appears that you just pick the right combination of shims to get the thickness that you need. Has anyone set the shims this way?

He's nervous about building it with these shims and would prefer to get the single shim that is the proper thickness to install.

Thanks.

Justin

You're going to end up with multiple shims to get where you need. Try getting a hokd of ZUK on here. Pretty sure he's done IFS fronts and he helped me a lot.

Ok thanks for the help. I'm glad I had an extra diff laying around so that I could take my time to get this figured out. I don't have manual hubs so it would have been a little more critical without it seeing it's my daily driver as well.
