Idles at 2500 RPM
1987 22r 5-speed 4×4 single cab. Normally with the truck in neutral or with the clutch pressed in my RPMs sit around the 1400 mark. I'm a teacher and yesterday they had a parade of graduates from the high school. Students on the sides of the road noticed me and called out to me. So I, an intellectual, pressed the clutch in and revved it up a few good times to show off a little. Well, after reassuring the kids it wouldn't blow up the idle started staying around 2500 RPMs. My throttle cable has always had the black plastic or rubber casing cracked and when I checked it yesterday post the event, I noticed the plastic right before the bracket near the air filter was completely off and missing. About a 3/4" section. Could the throttle cable cause the RPMs to float around 2500 when in neutral or the clutch pressed? Under driving conditions in gear, the truck's RPMs sit in the normal areas for corresponding speeds. If I'm riding at 35 mph and at say 1800 RPM in 4th gear, as soon as I press the clutch the RPMs begin to climb back up to the 2500. When I change gear or let off the clutch the RPMs return back to normal operating RPMs. I haven't looked around the carb yet. But I really feel like the throttle cable isn't receding all the way to set it back at regular operating RPMs. But who knows?
