Hello, new member here, I come from the BMW world. I am having a strange issue with my 86 4Runner.

1st issue: Rough idle, raises and drops while sitting still. Thinking this oculd either be spark plugs, or fuel problem. What are the most common reasons for idle problems with the 22re's?

2nd issue: It happens in 4th gear, sometimes 3rd gear when the RPM are around 2k-2.5k, and I let off the gas or just barely give it gas. It will studder and the RPM will go up and down around 200 or so, until I give it more gas.

Is this a common problem? I'm thinking either its the throttle position sensor or the fuel pump, but would like to have some more advice before I start tearing stuff apart.

It sounds like the TPS is either bad or out of adjustment.

 

My problems are as sivere as yours but the same simptoms. Tested the TPS tonight and it tests bad. TPS is $120.00 from AutoZone.
