Looking at the engine from the front it is the right rear bolt area. I put a ton of rtv on it.

I read on another site that you might need to grind down the metal flanges in the cover for it to seat properly but that sound out there. I have the parts to do the timing belt but it is too damn cold outside right now. I was hoping that it could wait till spring but the way it sounds right now that doesn't seem like a option.
I have:
-belt
-tensioner
-water pump
Whats the t-belt idler?
What gaskets do I need to do the job?

Thanks

I did the gasket on mine a few months ago (drivers side). I had a small leak in the exact same spot you are talking about.
I replaced the gasket with a toyota gasket and I too used black RTV. I only used it on the 4 spots the FSM specs it.
Then I torqued it down in the proper sequence to 4ft-lbs.
Not a drop as leaked out

I have never heard of having to grind it down to make it not leak...

The old gasket leaked because of a lack of RTV on that corner..

It would be pretty hard to warp the valve cover, those bolts snap at like 10ftlbs...

The tensioner, I just called it the idler instead. My bad.

I would buy:

2jugs of toyota coolant (they are not mixed)
new thermostat

Im not 100% sure on the needed gaskets, but I dont think its much.

I know how you feel.........I felt the same way about my 95 4runner auto 3vze after I purchased it....I found this web site after that purchase and wish I could have found this site before I purchased this 4runner because I would have purchased a 4runner 3.4
There is a lot of good folks on this site with a wealth of information to offer..... so all I can say is try to make Lemon aid with that 4runner that is what I'm doing with mine Hell I even put it up for sale hoping that someone would buy the POS but no luck so I have to move on with mine
Good luck and I will subscribe to this thread to watch your progress
