I now own the Legend.

I know I keep posting potential trucks for you guys to give me feedback on but I finally made a move on a 86 4X4 single cab. Its got spray on bedliner, aftermarket rims, 22RE injected 4cyl., cd, ac, ps, keyless black widow alarm, tires about %50, lifted and extra leaf spring (?), new paint, absolutely no rust, interior and motor look close to new but the cable broke for the odometer some time ago and the guy doesnt know how many miles are on the truck, except that it reads 54k, so it could be 154, 254k, who knows but all I know is I drove it for a good half hour at all speeds and this truck is absolutely solid, no leaks or pings and tranny is smooth.
Paid $3400
Heres what the guy improved/replace:
radiator, valve seals, connecting rod bearings, timing chain, brake master, clutch master, rebuilt idler arm, after market air filter, free flow exhaust, new rims, adjusted tappets, and also the front and rear brake were redone 1 year ago.
Since the mileage on the truck is unknown, I wanted to know what sort of diagnostic tests I can get a shop to run on the truck to give me a definitive condition of the motor.

Thanks for the feedback guys

So since I dont know what the miles are on the motor what sort of diagnostic tests can a shop run to give me the condition or reliability of the motor?

I'm pretty sure you can not determine the mileage from the ECU. You can usually only do that on newer cars, specifically ones with digital odometers. Did you happen to ask how long the odometer was unplugged for? Average commuter mileage is like 12,000-15,000 per year.

It sounds like he did a lot of maintenance and upgrades to it so I would think you are fine. You could to a compression test to see if one cylinder is lower than the rest but I doubt he would have put all that work into the motor and the truck if it needed a rebuild. You can also run a diagnostic yourself on the emmisions components by jumping the correct leads in the diagnostic harness (usually T1 and TE1), turning the key on and counting the flashes. Then you can search for the codes. These things usually run a very long time if they are maintained well.

All and all it looks like you got a great truck. Contgratulations.

I'm pretty sure that it's impossible to find the number of miles on the truck with the odometer unplugged.

But...

It's a toyota... who's worried about how many miles it has on it?

That is in fine shape for a 20 year old truck... nicer than my '88 for sure! Do you live somewhere where you don't have salt on the roads?

CLEAN....wish I knew how to help you out on the mileage man, but seriously, it seems to be in pretty good shape, just keep up your maintanence, and I think you should be fine...It is a toytoa after all.

update: its actually an 88 guess Ive been looking at so many I lost track lol but so what. Took it to a jap auto shop and had a compression test done and its 175, which according to the shop owner is awesome. the shop owner told me I got a damn good steal on this one and he doesnt anticipate any problems for a long time.
Glad I didnt get hung up on the odometer and pass on her. no guts no glory

Nice Truck

I found a 86 Turbo X-cab Sr5 2wd Power everything and Sunroof. 5sp 39K orig miles with Snug top camper and it looks like it was one year old. Yes they are hard to find. Mine gets 33+ mpg highway. Looks like a 2005 but with diff body lol.
