Here's the deal, I don't know if the turbo is ok. I don't want to put 1500+ into a turbo block and head and have the turbo blow or not work.

The problem with the 4.3 is what I have seen is that it will take 2000+ in adapters to get the 4.3 to bolt in, not counting on getting the 4.3 and carb/efi.

I think I can get this up and running on a budget and upgrade latter.

 

I would rather have a truck with a 22r than a truck without an engine due to lack of money. I say in your situation get the 22r in there & running right for now & like you said, upgrade later. I wouldn't toss the turbo engine or anything else though. build it when funds allow & you can toss it in later. Believe me, I understand that not everyone has cash to toss around. Good luck.

 

stock turbo's are plentiful around here....
you dont HAVE TO USE A STOCK 22RET turbo...

im pretty sure there were other stock toyota turbo's that were MUCH MUCH better in design..

and i could build and install a 4.3 in my truck...for less than $2000...

because i plan on doing it...and im gonna try to do it for less than $1500..LOL

 

I would buy the truck put the 22r motor in, keep the 22ret, and build 22ret over time to have a back up. You dont have to do it all at once take your time. You will then at least be able to pull the turbo off and check to see if it the bearings in are still good.

 

Well, the 22r is an 81 that is in a celica GT. It is complete but it is the pre 85.

I think I will pass on it. I do want to be able to use EFI if I choose to later on.

I don't want to get into the hybrid 20r head/early 22r block set up.

After searching other threads, I found some who say I can use my turbo EFI intake, distributer, and fuel injecters but change the ECM to the EFI. Is this true?

dude keep it turbo! heres some basics. 1. u can use an 85 and newer block. any machine shop can tap intp the oil galley ( raised section of the block running horizontaly along block from oil filter to back- infront of oil filter is not filtered so don't put it there.) 2. use rte spec pistons like other people said earlier. 3. the turbo head has 2 main differences. the combustion chamber size is a little bigger and the exhaust valve are a little better quality than the regular re valves. either one is no big deal. re valves are good enough. If u use an re head i'd recomend any good mls head gasket. (and arp studs don't hurt) and run 93 octane fuel so u don't get pre-detonation. and definatly scrap the pos ct 20 turbo and throw a ct 26 off the 7mgt supra motor on it!

 

Just found an '87 22r engine that needs a rebuild out of a truck.

Complete, airfilter to oilpan, clutch to radiator. All for $150 bucks!!!!

Now this gives me all the parts and pieces to get my project moving.

I am guessing that I will replace the factory carb.

If the 22R-TE turbo (Toyota CT20) is bad, it's a pretty simple swap to install a CT26 out of a Toyota Supra.

You CAN run the turbo ECU, with the turbo injectors, without the turbo. Just because it's a turbo ECU doesn't mean it can't handle not having boost. I mean, most of the time you drive around without boost don't you?

If you run a RE ECU, you need to run RE injectors too.

22R-TE blocks ar very similar to the 22R-E blocks. The oil passages for the turbo are still there, they just aren't exposed to the outside of the block. You need to drill and tap the oil feed, and oil drain, that's about it.

You CAN run a 22R-TE with a 22R-E head. They are different, but not different enough to make it a problem. You will however need to run low compression 22R-TE pistons. Commonly available online.

I say build up the turbo motor. If yuor turbo IS bad, either to a CT26 swap, or take off the turbo manifold, install a RE exhaust manifold, connect the intake pipes, plug the oil feed and drain, and drive it as an RE.

Now from some of the posts, I can use my Turbo intake, injectors, ECU, on the '87 22r head and block, making it an EFI, right??

I plan on running a header to replace the Turbo exhaust manifold.


My only problem is that I have none of the bolts, just parts.

 

yeah, that'll work. They toyota bolts are all standard metric sizes, mostly M6, and M8 bolts.

 

Well.......My project is starting to take place....

My 1988 xtracab's trans bit the dust, leaving me with a good 22re with all the goodies to fill the engine compartment. I will keep y'all posted.....

So i noticed quite the time gap between your posts, those trucks re pretty rare, and around here the turbo parts are like gold! wish I had the parts needed to install a turbo. I agree with one of the previous posts and just take your time gettin the turbo in it. Have you ever driven a 22re-t? it's awsome!
