How much is too much to pay?

Ok so I decided that my next project is going to be a truck. Only problem is that much like myself Toyota owners do not like to just give them away! I've decided to find a mid to early 90's Toyota p/u with hopefully a blown engine that I can pick up for cheap and then just replace the engine myself. I know asking for a finite price to pay is to exact but what would be a good range to work in? e.g. $400 - $600 is what I was thinking - then another $500 - $800 for a used engine.

My Bro in law got 1200 for his 94 with a blown engine 2 yrs ago. It all depends on your location I would think. You can't get anthing under 3000 around here most of the time, but if you go to the next county over, you'll find them a lot cheaper.

I'm outside of Houston, TX - most vehicles around here are Chevy or Ford and those few who do have a Toyota hold on to them! I've been on Craigslist daily but I'm not really sure of any other free resources.

You don't find deals in"popular" spots very often. You find $500 Toyotas by scouring local classifieds, car lots and front yards on a regular basis. Persistence finds good deals.

Being in texas you might have to check the little cities around your area on CL, I found mine in Austin when i lived in SA.
Not a bad drive really.
But x2, persistence is key..

My buddy picked up his 94 pickup with a knocking engine for $600. the outside is normal wear and tear, but no rust and the inside is like new. Now it needs a new engine, the old one slung a rod threw the side of the block leaving a nice hole.

Craigslist is the best place to look.

georgiayota - I'm in Houston

I think what I may do is take a drive this weekend to some of the smaller neighboring cities and just hit the mechanic shops - if nothing else leave my number.
