i've done some search and read. but i'm just not 100% sure what gear i have on my rig. i'm the 2nd owner, don't know if the p.o. had changed out the gear or not.

on the VIN plate, the axle code is G284, according to the search i've done, it should be 4.3 with 4 pinion(i wish it's not true, 'cause i'm getting 32x10.5 tires).

it has a 5 speed manual trans, the original equiped tires were 225/75/15. but the speedo is way off with those tires on. after i upgraded to 3rd Gen alloy rims and 31" tires, it's all good. in 5th gear, exactly 70mph@3000rpm, which matches the GPS reading. i've heard that's the 4.88 gear numbers.

oh, BTW, what is the transmission model # for this year? is it W56?

Lift one tire, spin it and count the times the driveshaft spins.

Sounds like you have 4.56, which would be the "normal" gears with the 31" tire package. It's not unheard of for the plates to have the wrong tire size on them.

I am running 33's with 4.88 and tach 3000 at 70, so you don't have 4.88's.

All 3.0 manual transmissions are the VERY stout R150H

 

does that gear ratio go for me too? 91 4x4 3.0 5-speed?

You can pull the driveshaft flange, the end of the pinion will have a paint code, 4.88 is white, I don't remember the others but the whole range can be found in the FAQ on Pirate.com IIRC. I don't know about 94 and up but I know on 93 and earlier the door plate can be wrong if it has the factory 31'/4.88 package.

 

You have an 8.0" ring gear, 4.30 ratio, and 4 pinion. thats the same setup I have, and I'm scared to go with 32's because it's easy enough to stall as it is. I got that from this website. http://toyota.off-road.com/toyota/ar....jsp?id=274535
