I'm thinking that there's a pic missing from your post, but if you snapped a head off of a bolt, then you'll need to EZ it out and replace it. If you can't get it out, then you'll need to drill it out and drop a HeliCoil in there.

It's a pulley... i think water pump, or somewhere close by anyway

 

Looks like the nut for the pulley on the PS pump...I'd try soaking w/ PB blaster for a day and then try hammering on a SAE socket of the closest size on (which will ruin it of course...but who cares its SAE )

 

Bolt off would be easier, they sellt hem at home depot or the autoparts store for about 20 bucks for a set if you dont wanna ruin a socket or maybe snap the head of the bolt off.

 

my question is when i turn it it tuns the pulley, (and engine) so how do i get the bolt off?

 

go to Sears and get this set of nut removers.

 

impact gun.

 

Block the pulley somehow, or hold the shaft with a wrench.

 

An impact gun will do it, but only if you have access to air.

 

Pinch the belt next to the pulley with vise grip pliers.

 

A box-end wrench and a hammer. Smack the handle of the wrench with the hammer. Be sure to tighten the belt up good to discourage the pulley from slipping.

BTW, that looks to be the power steering pump. Why are you taking the pulley off?

 

i am just trying to replace the nut so that it will not cause a problem later when it is too stripped to use.

This is what i was told to use to turn the engine over for valve adjustment, but it is too stripped to get a good hold on, so i am trying to replace it first.

 

You will probably need a strap or chain wrench like one of these:

Have a friend hold the strap/chain wrench while you crank on the nut with a breaker bar. You may still need the nut removing tool as listed above in post #7 as well. If you use a chain wrench instead of a strap wrench, wrap the pulley with a rag to protect the surface.

 

I had some luck with PB blaster soak 24 hrs. Put a strap or chain wrench around the pully ( sometimes a good heavy rag works also) and use an impact wrench on the bolt.

 

It's a nut thread onto a shaft w/ a allen key dead center of the shaft just like 99% of the pulleys that are belt drivin....heat the nut cherry red then quench it with water.

 

Ok all good suggestions.

My question
Why are you trying to turn the motor over with the PS pulley bolt? Use the 19mm main crank bolt for that (the bolt that holds the main pulley with the timing marks on it).

 

use the 19m bolt on the main pully thats where your soposed to do it from read the manual.

 

Dremel tool w/ cutoff disc and chisel or nut splitter.

 

Thanks all for the suggestions, Basicly i was told by the previous owner that he thought it needed the valves and timing chain looked at and that was the bolt to turn to get the engine to turn to the right spot for valve adjustment, (by the looks of it that is what he used anyway) However i had not yet used that bolt, becuase i wanted to replace it before i tried the valve adjustment. Thanks much to all, i will use the 19m bolt on the main pully. And will try to never ever have to replace the PS pully!!
