lol... you're kidding, right?

go fill up. set your trip meter or write down your miles that are showing on the odometer. drive until it gets below a 1/4 tank but before you get to empty.

to the gas station and fill up. record the number of gallons from the pump display. record how many miles you traveled.

divide the number of miles traveled by the amount of gas you used (number of gallons).

that will be your MPG - Miles per Gallon...

Unless you ran it out of gas ? I don't understand why you would need to know the capacity to find the mileage?

miles per gallon = miles driven on full tank divided by capacity in gallons
therefore you need to know how much the tank holds to calculate MPG

not really, like bamachem said... reset your trip, go drive, go fill up... divide the numbers and youve got MPG...

Dude, you don't need to drive until you're driving on fumes to know what MPG you're getting, all you need to know is how many miles you've driven between fill-ups.

Just as Bamachem said:

1) Fill up with gas.
2) Reset Trip-o-meter (or write down mileage)
3) Drive for a while (could be 20 or 200 miles, doesn't matter)
4) Fill Up with gas again.
5) Write down number of gallon of gas you put in the tank in step 4.
6) Divide the number of miles you drove by the number of gallons you put in.

Viola! MILES / GALLONS = MILES PER GALLON = MPG

Can we possibly be any more clear??!!

It amazes me how many people cannot figure fuel mileage -- I don't want to hurt anyones feelings, but i am seriously amazed! As I said before the only reason you would need to know, or could even figure mileage accurately that way is if you ran it completely out of gas.

I agree completely as many posts as there are on this topic I would think people would have this pretty well figured out. Perhaps they dont know about the search feature of yotatech?!?!

so if i had a 200 gallon tank and filled it up with 201 gallons and drove the first day around 15 miles, and then the next day drove 115 kilometers cause i was in Canada, and then filled up with 115 liters what would i have then?

I think this misunderstanding explains why some people occasionally, and not necessarily on this board, claim to get 34 MPG and that is imperial gallons.

Actually I filled up and am going to run it down to zero doing normal driving so I can get an accurate mpg. Instead of driving 20 miles and filling up. you arent taking into account hwy vs city miles over a full tank of gas.
