Horrible Valve adjustment????

I just buttoned up my 22RE after installing a new cyl. head. I tried starting it yesterday and had no luck. Everything is connected and I've got spark, and fuel but it won't fire up. I'm thinking that I screwed up when adjusting the valves by not starting with it on TDC on the compression stroke. I just threw it to TDC and started. You think this could be my prob? Or could it be something else?

Probably, because the engine has to be rotated to each firing cylinder to set the valves. Once you establish that #1 is ready to fire, adjust both intake and exhaust. Then rotate engine clockwise 90 degrees and do #3. Once done, rotate engine to TDC and do #4. Finally, rotate engine 90 more degrees and do #2. I assume we are talking about a 22r 4 cylinder. It really helps to put a little red or yellow paint on the engine mark and the pulley mark to establish 0. That way you will see the mark when its at the bottom for cylinders #3 and #2. If I remember correctly, intake is 0.008" and exhaust is 0.010". I hope you got the timing chain right or none of this will fix that problem..

That is all.

Hmm.... I was told to set it at TDC on the comp. stroke and adj. the exhaust valves on 1 & 3, and the intake on 1 & 2, then rotate it 180 deg. and adj. the exhaust on 2 & 4, and the intake on 3 & 4. How do I tell if #1 is on it's compression stroke??

if your on the compression stroke the intake valve will have just opened and closed, and the exaust valve will be getting ready to open next stroke. the distributor should be pointing at the number one plug firing that cylinder. could your timing be 180* out?

I don't think so. Could that have easily happened? I never removed the t-chain sproket from the chain when I changed the head.
