High mileage valve adjustment

ive been trying to adjust some of the valve noise out of my 22re. its got 150K miles on it. should i still be trying to set the valve lash at 8 and 12 thousandths or something else. i have adjusted twice now and it still sounds like at least one of the valves is ticking (more like knocking) loudly. is it possible something else is going on in there? bad rocker arm or something??

Heck, my "new" engine only has about 10K or less on it and it ticks/knocks like crazy...I can't get rid of it. These are noisy little engines....tons of posts on this site about it...lol.

You can adjust your valves until hell freezes over and usually can't get rid of the tick. I'm not saying that isn't your problem..just mentioning that. I doubt it's your rocker or anything, but I don't know.

make sure you're doing em hot. I had the same issue, and so did a ton of other people. I ended going .011, .007 hot, and that seemed to be much quieter. Either way they tend to be noisy untill the engine is warm.

are you sure that it's not the timing chain?

excellent point. when you remove the valve cover to do the adjustment take a look at the timing chain and guides, and see if theyre in good shape.

The valve adjuster stud tips wear down and are no longer slightly convex, so you get the noise because the surface riding across the valves is uneven. Last I checked, new ones were about 2 bucks apiece from http://www.1sttoyotaparts.com/ PN# 90913-05019

They are noisy engines, but even at 8&12, you can really only hear the valves at idle on my truck.
