I recently have been experiencing some high idle with my truck. It's mostly upon start up that my truck shoots up to 2000-2200 rpms. Once the truck is warmed up it's still sitting around 1000rpms. Does anyone have any thaughts about what might be causing this problem and how to fix it?

 

Try turning down the idle air screw maybe. My 95 4Runner likes to idle at 900-1000 too, even if I turn down the idle screw it will sit at about 1000, otherwise it runs fine so I odn't mind. But, when I start it it only goes to about 1400 rpms though.

 

i believe that the 3.0 (even my 80) are set to idle high on startup to warm up quicker. once you have it warmed up (like a drive to the store, etc...) park turn off a/c and heater fan. adjust idle screw on TB housing until desired idle is reached.
also i would say when you do this and set the idle to check the timing.

 

1. so the idle screw is on the tb housing ... which way do I turn to lower the idle rpm?

2. why would it jump up to 2000-2200rpms upon startup of the truck. I understand that it's suppose to run a little higher then idle to help warm the truck up but that's way to high. Everyone else that I know that drives a toyota pickup with a 22r 22re or 3.0 doesn't rev above 1600rpms even on the coldest day. Is there something that can be adjust ( a start up screw ) or something like the idle screw? or is this something that I need to consult a dealer or mechanic?

 

Clockwise=lower, counter-clockwise=higher. It's a fairly common phenomena, mine(3vze) does the same, esp. when colder than usual weather. No adjustments besides the one we're talkin'. If you know a mechanic you trust, go for it. He may see something I can't. Oh yeah, if you go outside of factory specs on your timing, it will effect the idle, also. So, theoreticaly, your timing may be off, but I doubt it.

 

I was talking with a friend and explained to him my problem and he seems to think that when it raises up to 2200rpms and starts to come down and revs up and down that it's something to do with the Mass Airflow Sensor. I was thinking that I would pick up some cleaner along with some throttle body cleaner and clean them both up tomm and see if that helps.

It was idling down to 900rpms this evening once it was warmed up and I came back home from Walmart. I don't think that's to awful bad, but I might lower it down a little anyways.

 

If you feel brave you can pry off the black plastic window on the MAF sensor. It has three thin prongs that sense position of the MAF sensor lever. These can break, and when they do break, you dont even get a CEL. Also, you can stick a meter on it to see if its bad. You may have even gotten liquid in the TPS or it may even be going bad.

 

I was going to clean up the Throttle Body and hopefully that would clean it up a little. I'm planning doing an overhaul on the engine in the spring, but I guess I might have to start a little earlier.

I was definately going to have someone help me with the MAF because that's something that I don't want to break.

Is this something that happens with others around the winter time? I never noticed this at all during the warmer months.
