title says it all- is it smart to use the stock steel bumper as a jack point? I think it is probably not but its worth asking. I just got mine in the mail from cabelas this morning.

In the catalogue they show the 'lift mate' a dual strap with hooks designed to go around rims. That looks like and Ideal set up.

What do you all think?

Using the bumper is fine, but it may bend it a little. If you can get it under the trailer hitch, that works too.

One of the best things I ever did is take a piece of really grippy rubber and taped it around the jacking point on the platform. It allows it to grab metal better, and is a little more gentle on painted/chrome surfaces.

Just be freaking careful with that thing. Hi-Lifts aren't a toy, and have the potential to injure or kill people if they aren't used safely. NEVER get under the vehicle while it's supported by the Hi-Lift. Always have control of the lever/handle on the jack. They are one of the most useful recovery/general tools that I have ever come across, but they can be incredibly dangerous.

I think you'd probably bend the bumper a little.

One other good idea is to get a couple of pieces of treated 2x12 about 18" long and screw them together. This will make a great platform if you have to lift the rig in sand or mud. Put some skate board tape on one side so the bottom of the jack will have something to grip.

Yep, a platform is a GREAT thing to have when using a Hi-Lift. The bases are narrow and tend to sink into plain dirt, and provide 0 stability in mud. Hi-Lift sells a base, but you can make one for about ten bucks.

I find the bumper bends too much to be of real use as a jacking point.
