Help with Valves/Cylinders
So I bought a 1990 4runner 3.0 off a guy that had started his head gasket replacement and he didn't put the engine at TDC and the Cam shaft I sure was moved so now how do I get these to match again? Just set #"s 1 and 6 valves open? Or how does that work. Probably gonna end up buying a repair manual but I thought I'd ask first. Thanks.

things to look for, not sure if this will help you..
my 883vz had obvioulsy marked cam gears, you need to look at the white not the yellow marks, get the engine at TDC crank wise, line up the cam gears (the white) with the white marks on that plate behind the gears, install the belt put tension on it.. should be ok i dont see why not? the rotor for the dist. should be pointing at that rubber grommet where the wiring leaves the housing to plug into the engine harness.
this is if we're talking about the same engine, and this is rough.. so if this doesnt make sense, or even if im discussing the wrong engine with you just ignore me. kinda new to the toyotas, just tryin to be helpful

yes. Crank at tdc. Point the etched marks on the cam gears straight up. Belt on and tightened. There is a pretty fool proof way to stab those distributors but it would take alot here to describe it. Like corey said...pretty much point your rotor at the rubber grommet and you should be ok
