I AM LOOKING FOR A HIGH AMP ALTERNATOR FOR MY 1989 4RUNNER (V6). i AM PLANNING ON INSTALLING A STEREO SYSTEM AS WELL AS A BIG CB RADIO SETUP. I FOUND A 160 AMP ALTERNATOR THAT IS A DROP IN.
ALSO, HAS ANYONE PUT IN A SECOND ALTERNATOR? I HAVE SEEN CHEVY'S WITH MULTIPLE ALTERNATOR SETUPS, BUT NOTHING IN A V6 TOY.
PLEASE HELP! ANY AND ALL INFO WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Check with Bumpin' Yota; he's the king of alternators/all things electronic on these vehicles. There's a company that makes a 250 amp alternator for the Yota.

 

I'd check with your local auto electrical shop...they should be able to make just about anything you need.

 

i had a local shop build one up for me, 160 amp unit installed for 200$ cdn. they even replaced the diode from my stock unit that they scavenged for the new one. the original stock unit got all cleaned up and checked over at the same time.

make sure you bring some coffees, treats etc, goes a long way to getting those little extras.

U may laugh at me but i bought a 90 amp from north west off road. 411 dollars but that was because i hadnt sent my core back for 85 dollars refund. Bought that back in september and the old one is still under my dresser in my room as we speak lol. But in my opinion 90 amps is enough and can find them cheaper thru jegs racing i think

Hopefully you understand that its not going to be cheap to buy one of these. If you want an upgrade, you have to be willing to pay for it.

I had mine redone by Boyle Future Tech in California. $118 including return shipping.

The key is how much does it make at idle - not what the max output is. You can have a 3000A alternator and still kill your battery running stereo, winch, rocklights, etc while idling.

Boyle will rebuild it for max low RPM output (if you ask them). Mine does like 60A at 1500 RPM, maxes out at 130A IIRC.

what exactly are you planning on putting in your vehicle anyway? it wouldnt hurt to have a higher output amp, but before my truck got broken into, i was running a kenwood headunit, i was running about 920 watts of audio (speakers and sub) along with 550 watts of lighting and i never killed any batteries or alternators. i was able to turn on all the lights at once and my stereo was still on (not at max power i dont think). you may want to put more in than what i had, but just thought i'd offer my experience if it meant possibly saving some money. good luck

 

I had the same thing done by Boyle. VERY happy with the result.

 

One high Amp alternator and some (2-3)good batteries, like the optimas previously mentioned should do the trick for you if you are doing one of those ground pounding deals with just bass.
Don't think you would have enough room for dual alternators. You might wanna check out CustomTacos.com. I am pretty sure they have a stereo build section though that good help you out. Good luck!
