help me figure out this noise? (mp3)

Hello all,

I am looking at purchasing a 1991 Toyota pickup with the 3.0 V6, 5-speed manual transmission, and 4x4 package.

The truck runs really great - the owner claims to have installed a new clutch, and it shifts fantastically, and generally operates in a smooth and decent manner. No problems accelerating, shifting, keeping in gear, or running with the 4x4 engaged.

The only thing is that until it warms up, a loud buzzing / light grinding (but not really grinding) noise that comes up from the drivetrain under the vehicle, which vibrates the floorboards, will come on in bursts. When cold, the noise will turn on, then off semi-frequently, maybe one 3-second burst every three or four minutes - the longest it has stuck around was about five seconds.

After the truck warms up, it hardly does this at all. I recorded my test drive, but unfortunately turned the recorder on after the truck had warmed up so I didn't capture as many examples had I recorded when it was cold, but hopefully they're enough to go on. Since the truck was warm the noise only happened three times in 15 minutes, and for very short bursts. But I recorded it. The recorder was placed in front of the stick shifter on the floor.

So could some of you more knowledgeable Toyota people listen to the recordings and give me some insight? One is 20 seconds long - I spliced the three instances of the noise close together so you can hear all three times it happened within the 15 minutes drive. The second recording is a looped version of the first time the noise came around, to give you an idea about what it sounds like when it happens for longer duration when the car is cold.

This noise only happens when moving. Pressing the clutch pedal, shifting into neutral, applying brakes has no effect on it. Comes on, goes away, seemingly at random. The sound comes from under the truck but I can't localize where, I thought maybe driver's side wheel area but now I think it might be elsewhere, I can't really tell, but you can feel the floors vibrating when the noise is heard.

Listen to the recordings here
