Help buying a 93
I told a guy I was gonna buy his 93 truck, 22re, 5 speed single cab. This is it if you want to take a look:

but I did a dry compression test on it and there's a couple problems. 1 and 4 cylinders are sitting at about 150, 3rd cylinder is at 130, and 2nd cylinder threads were stripped/cross threaded so I couldn't get an accurate reading. I've never driven one of these before but the engine feels weak. 1st and 2nd gear accelerate fine, but after third gear it's really sluggish and doesn't feel like it's producing torque at all. Is that just how these engines are and I'll get used to it? It doesn't feel right if I'm honest, even for a 4 cylinder. I'm gonna do a wet test tomorrow to see if it gets the compression up in that 3rd cylinder. There was significantly more carbon build up on that spark plug. I read on another forum that the head gasket can fail at the 3rd or 4th cylinder.
On top of that it has a hard start. Engine shakes and sputters and you have to press on the gas to get it started. Makes a weird sound ("knocking"? "clanking"?) for about 15 seconds then the idle balances out and it runs fine with no noise.
There's a couple 4runners from the same generation at the LKQ's around me, and a long block from there runs for $200. I'm tempted to drive it till it dies and then put one of those in. Sort of a side note that I haven't searched for yet, but do engines from the 4runners swap into the truck without hassle?
Anyway, advice on if this engine is toast? I keep hearing about how bulletproof these engines are, I'm tempted to test how far I can push it.
