Help... 88 Truck Overheating
I have a 1988 Toyota Truck with a 22re engine. I am having constant overheating problems. I have flushed the system, replaced the thermostat, rechecked the thermostat in boiling water, pressure check the cooling system. I have no water in the oil and see no white smoke out the tail pipe. My fan clutch works and the water pump was just replaced. Do you think its the headgasket or maybe my raidiator is just clogged and I am not getting adequate flow through my radiator. I can get a new radiator for about $85. Just hate to go through all that and it not be the problem. I really need to get this thing back on the road. My F250 is killing me at the gas pumps. Thanks

I had a over heating problem soon after i buaght my 88 4runner. I took my rad to the shop and it was like 80% clogged??something high anyways. Maybe take it and see if they can test it. After replacing the rad it stopped over heating. Maybe a bad water pump? i think they reverse flush it at the shop and it works alot better

pulling the radiator tomorrow. Will take some pics and update my profile so you guys can see my baby. Poor thing has been sitting for too long. Bad thing is I bought it form a friend who drove it constantly. Probably why I got such a deal on it. Oh well nothing but time and money but one things for sure I wouldn't trade it for nothing.

I'm betting it's the radiator. Same problems I had with mine, and my radiator ended up being all clogged up. I replaced it with a GDI 3 row radiator, and it's fantastic. Not a problem since.

Does anyone know how much fluid the radiator holds. Just the radiator it self. I knew how much it should hold and test it that way I could know, estimate wise, if its clogged.
I do plan on replacing it anyway I have a brand new on the way. $80 free shipping.
I also would like to go ahead and thank everyone for the information and go ahead and give thanks for info in the future. One thing is for sure I most definately like this site. Most informative site I have found. Thanks Guys!!!!

If you don't mind me asking, where did you find a new radiator for $85 shipped? My radiator is toast and I'm getting a new engine put in here in the next few weeks so I want to replace the radiator at the same time.

ok technically it's not being shipped, like fed ex, I found one at the coast and I having someone bring up to me when they head this way. Sorry for the mis-lead. I did find on the internet at Rock Auto a radiator for around $80. Should do fine if your looking to save the money.

ok still waiting on the radiator but I also forgot to mention the following:
While driving the truck before it begins to overheat I hear a gurgling sound behind the dash. Could this be air in the system. If so I have read about guys burping the system. Is that when you park on a incline and let it run to get the air out? Any other suggestions?

Nice looking truck -- a classic.
Yes, I think that gurgling sound could be air in the system. I've never "burped" my cooling system, but there's been a lot written here about doing it.

I am really considering pulling the water pump and replacing the fan and all. When I bought the truck they guy I bought it from replaced the water pump with a new one from Advance Auto. I have heard from a lot of people that he could have bought a fualty remanufactured pump. Thoughts?

It's a toss up (atleast around here) to get parts from places like Autozone, Checker etc. When I worked at a shop we usually tried to go with atleast NAPA or Carquest because their parts were a little higher quality than the lower priced chains. I'd say there is a decent chance the reman'd water pump is garbage. I'd go with Engnbldr. myself. Good prices and he doesn't sell garbage.

Well I pulled the radiator this afternoon before work. I flushed it out real good with water. No real sign of it being clogged though. Now not to sure if thats the problem. The water rushes out pretty good and no slugde or build up coming out. Thoughts?

Mine had the same results when I tested it by flushing it...I thought it wasn't clogged either until I took a laser thermo to it. It was near 200 on each side, and about 80-90 right down the middle. But water still seemed to flow out steadily with no deposits or gunk coming out. I'd still suspect the radiator...take a laser thermometer to it after it's been running (sides, and middle) and see what temps you get. If ti comes out anything like mine, then you've got a bad radiator.
