Angry Help, 5 speed stuck in reverse

Hope someone can help. I have a 1991 4Runner V6 5 spd. I found that my clutch mater cylinder had lost all or most of the DOT 3 fluid. Before that, shifting into first or reverse was a bear (yes I know, routine maintenance should have caught the problem). I had the truck towed (flat bed) home. The clutch is now working fine, but I cant get the transmission out of reverse.

I have taken the shifter out, but nothing obvious. Any thoughts or ideas? I'm a poor cable installer and would like to avoid a tranny shop if possible.

Thanks

its possible that your clutch is smoked and wont let you shift outa gear, seen it happen. Try rocking your truck back and forth while trying to shift out. Also check to see if the clutch slave cylinder is fully engaging the clutch when pushed in. good luck!

First I just want to say I'm with you on the poor cable installer thing... I too am a lowly installer of hellish cable... anyway... I would check just to be sure that your brake/clutch lever bracket that is attached to the firewall isn't cracked. Mine was cracked and was being held on by a very thin bracket... when that finally snapped, I couldn't shift at all. I've heard of some other people having the same problem I had. I think a new bracket was like $125... I just had my friend weld up the original and it's worked for about 2 years now...

Pulled the transmission today. That thing is heavy!! After explaining what happened to the the transmission repair guy, they think I broke the shift fork for reverse. Now the question is, how bad is the repair going to hurt my bank account. At least I saved a small fortune pulling the tranny myself.
