4x4 seems to engage but not work. New to Toyotas. Help me please.

1989 3.0 4x4 5 speed

I am currently waiting to install a new marlin crawler shifter seat and bushing as soon as it comes in the mail. But while I wait I am going to try to figure out what's going on with 4 wheel drive. All of its problems started well after my shifting issues.

When I go to put my truck into 4x4 it goes in in both hi and lo or at least it feels like it does. You know how when in 4 lo, especially, it feels grabby and doesn't pick up speed. It does all this. And the light comes on in the dash and stats on like it should.

however when if I try to go up any hills when farming it will not go. I had my cousin check and the front driveshaft is spinning.

Could someone please lead me in the direction of what this could be? And I'll try to answer any questions that can help you help me.

Manual or auto hubs? If they are manual and I know this is a dumb question but are they locked in if they are manual?

Red face

Might also be a problem with one of the hubs .

Quite easy to check

With both hubs locked in transfer case in 4HI or low

Wheels on ground the front drive shaft should not turn.

If this has the Auto Locking hubs not to be confused with the ADD system

Those were a royal pain here in the Northeast it did not take long till they quit working

okay. It is the manual lock hubs. And yesI've locked them in and checked and re-checked.

but I thought with 4 wheel drive in the front (short) drive shaft was supposed to turn? Isn't that what turns the front wheels?

When the manual hubs are UN-locked, and the transfer case is in 4-HI, you can reach under the truck and turn the front drive shaft by hand.

I think wyoming9 is suggesting that you first lock the hubs, then unlock the hubs and shift to 4wd. In each case, you should NOT be able to rotate the front driveshaft. If you can, then something didn't connect.
