okay ive searched and searched and still confused. 86 22r 177000miles. slightly overheating when driving, overheats alot while running heat or defrost, white smoke especially when warming up, oil looks good, coolant looks good. pls help

 

oh yea lossing coolant slowly from overflow res.

 

White smoke out the tail pipe and loss of coolant through the over flow is the same thing that mine is doing, and I know it has a blown head gasket.
I would check my cooling system if I was you, could be a clogged thermostat, or some other issue with the cooling system, but If I had money on it, I would say it was the head gasket. Take a look at your spark plugs and do a compression check, this will give you a real good idea of what is going on in there

 

Get a coolant pressure tester. Sears has them for less than $50.

Something to note is that it MAY be the o-ring in the idle air control valve located on the throttle body, which will slowly leak coolant into the throttle body where it goes out the exhaust. This could explain why the coolant & oil show no signs of intermixing.

i had the same problem a few months back with my 22re. Loosing coolant and it would over heat when sitting for awhile. Loss of compression after time and eventually used a tester hooked up to the radiator to check for combustion gasses in the coolant and you guessed it came up positive for the gasses. The head gasket was leaking on the #4 cylinder.

 

I put a band aid fix on my engine, used a product that you put in with the coolant to seal up the head gasket leak. After I did this, I took out the plub from cylinder #1 and it was covered in crap. Afterwords I put a bottle of seafoam through the intake and it ran like a top for 8 months. I do not recommend this as I don't care about this engine and just wanted a temporary fix till I find a better engine to attach to my drive train than the 3.0vze. The product worked great for 8 months and fifteen thousand miles but has blown through and I'm back to ruff running.

Mine has shown no signs of coolant and oil intermixing as the head gasket leak is only between the water passage and cylinder #1.

 

FYI you don't have to buy a coolant pressure test kit, you can rent them free from the likes of AutoZone or Checker.
