I've seen a truck that looks exactly like that driving around Arizona - it may be the same guy. I know he has a website that documents all the mods he has done to his truck.

On Pirate4x4 in the FAQ there is a thread about using pickup tailgates on 4Runners. I'll see if I can find it.

Found it: 2nd Gen truck tailgate onto a 1st Gen 4Runner

Looks pretty easy to do to me.. Take OEM top, cut, there you go.
The plastic rear would need to be done by a shop (at least I can't do it).
Tops here in TX - last one I saw was given away free.. couldn't even get $100 for it.

I would like to do something like this to protect my speakers a little. It seems like a lot of work though and i would be scared to cut a nice top in half!

In the thread I just posted a link to the guy shows with pictures and explains how to do all of the fiberglass fabrication. Extremely radical.

Here's mine.. Not I didn't do two tops that can be mated together, but I did have to blend the top after cutting it. It's essentially two shells and you'll have to do some work to get them to bond... What else you gonna do with a spare top though?

Completed.. Changed the color to black, which took more time than anything else.. Takes a while to get a non glossy durable finish, courtesy of Dupont and 3M.

I'm just finishing up making a targa-style peal back top on mine. As part of it I did a similar cut to the ones above.
Here's a link to the proces on 4x4wire:
http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showfl...5&o=14&fpart=1

Mine is bit different though, as the goal was for there to be very little "top" remaining, just to be used as a frame.

And ome teaser pics:

Started

All cut

Test fit using my bikini top

All painted up, front half, no roof

With fabric on complete frame

So I have like 10 different combinations possible.
Working on side panels now.

If you mean a canvas type top I believe Bestop and Canback make them. If you mean a convertible type top like a Miata I've never heard of one being done on a runner... there may have been some custom made for pick-ups similar to the Dodge one but I've never seen any of them either...
