The lower the gearing, the more critical the setup. In the link that AxleIke posted, you can see the gears side by side. The 5.71 has a considerably stronger teeth, but since there are fewer, it is more critical to ensure prooer engagement.

Before condeming the gears, one has to look at the installer too!

I can tell you that properly installed 5.71's are considerably stronger than stock Birfields...
