Thanks kyle 22r for your help. So are these gears enough to run 33's, and still get ok gas mileage??? I got 31's on 15x10 rims and I get 11-12mpg. No Elton, the spare is under the truck.

You might be a little overgeared compared to stock because of the auto, but it will be fine.

What I mean by overgeared is your gears will be a little higher than a stock ratio. It might be a little confusing, but the lower number your gears are, the higher the gears actually are. For example, 5.29s are lower than 4.10s, thus more capable of turning bigger tires. 33" tires, 4.88 gears, and a manual is a good combo. An auto with the same tires and gears would need lower gears to have the same feel as the manual, but is still sufficient. That is why most manual Yotas come stock with 4.10s, while most autos come stock with 4.56s. You having 4.88s with an auto, 33's will be fine. 35's would really be pushing it, and you would find your rig slower.

If you have manual tranny. I love my 4.88/33/manual tranny combo. A little better than stock (4.56, 31), much better than 4.56/33. IMHO, stock was too low - first was almost worthless - by the time you got moving, you were tached out.

If you have auto, overdrive will be about worthless with 4.88. 5.29 AT LEAST, and consider 5.71 - seriously, the overdrive on the auto is TALL! I've driven a 4Runner with 3.0, auto, 5.71, 35's and it is a DOG - won't hold the overdrive on anything remotely uphill.

My 3.0 auto with 4.88's and 31's already won't hold overdrive on anything uphill. I can't wait to see what it does when I put on my 33's.

It probably has to do with the stock tire size. The 4.88's came with 31" tires, and I also think it had to do with the tow package also.

From the postings I've seen, 4.10's were pretty common in 1st gen's and older vehicles. It has also been noted that occasionally the code has not 'alway's been correct. I decided to confirm that my 92 model 3.0 auto 4Runner actually did have he 4.56's as indicated by the code on the sticker. Just jack up one rear wheel, block the front wheels and put the auto tranny in neutral. If you have an open diff, turn the rear wheel full around TWO REVOLUTIONS. Count the number of times the pinion turns. I put a mark with a piece of chalk on the pinion and housing to make it easier to count. If it goes around just a bit more than 4 times,, it's 4.10,, 4 and 1/4 times,, prolly a 4.30,, 4 and a half,,,4.56.
