Hey Guys,

The Novak adapter arrived.

It did not come with instructions, and I thought it would be machined to replace the trans front bearing plate, but it's not. So You have to use the R150F's plate, with the adapter. I'm sure they have a reason for this.

To Novak's credit, the adapter is very well made, with spot on tolerances, and fitment. It's also made for a "similar" swap, not Mine, so I have no complaints.

Front side

Back side

Time to put the trans together.

Main shift rod in place

Rear case ready

Dont forget this

Front case on, input shaft bearing retainer in place

Puzzle Time!

More shortly.

Thanks, Kiwi

Hey Guys,

I had to cut off the R150f's, throw out bearing neck, and relieve the castings ribs for clearance. The adapters neck is the same dia.

Looks good to Me, lets get it on the trans.

This just might Work!

Success! Ready for bellhouse.

Drilling out bellhouse bosses, for 1/2" bolts. These were originally cast for threading, but now the bolts come from inside, the bell and thread into the adapter.

Cant use supplied bolts, because theres no room for hex heads. Had to use 1/2"-18-2" allen heads.

After 2 months of screwing around, I finally have what I was after,.....A Jeep/Pontiac/Novak/Toyota, Transmission. Talk about CrossMOJOnization!

This week, the Firebird motor's comming out, and will be prepared for transplant.

I will keep posting, if there's interest. I also need that tire info/help, anyone?

Thanks, Kiwi

Sweet work dude!
267/75/16's "should" be about 31.8".. but mine in actuality are about 31" high exactly... (where a 31x10.5 would be about 30.25-30.5).
Good to know for sure that all this stuff bolts together.
On a good day in my 89 with stock wheels i can get 19mpg bone stock. (epa is 16) 3.slow 5spd... a pickup, i could get 2mpg better. with that motor... 24mpg maybe... that would be sweet.

Thank You, Greg

I think that tire selection is going to be critical, for this to work.

I'm sorry to hear that tire ratings are not actual, kinda like 2x4 lumber. I've been around tires My whole life, but never had to know about this stuff.

I dont want to be any higher rpm wise, then already calculated for 32" dia.. Anybody else have Ideas about this?

Btw it seems, that I'm back to Rustbucket's "exponential" post. It's Kinda like a "Seinfeld" episode, luv ya Rust. You were ......rrrr...wwr..Right! I knew I could get that out. Didn't think I'd remember, did Ya.

Thanks, Kiwi

Best way to get a true 32", would be to run a 33x9.5 or 10.5 BFG all terrain.
My 33" mud's measure just over 32" brand new (after i wear 1/2" of the lugs down, they'll be 31.5"!

Yeah, these are some pretty tough motors. My parents bought a 93 Lumina with the 3.8 back in 1995. My dad drives all over the state of Georgia for work, and used this van for several years. In 2000, he sold it to his brother for 600 when the transmission began to shift erratically; then it was at 190,00 miles. He fixed it for next to nothing and drove it for a few years. He gave it to my dad's other brother, and he uses it to transport workers to the chalk mines. Last I checked, this van is over the 300,000 mile mark on the original transmission and engine.

Hey Greg

Thanks for the info!

As for the rest of the build, I got the clutch Figured out. Stock pilot bush, fits new shaft perfectly. Some TB issues yet. I will be using pieces below.

97' Firebird 3800 II, 5 sp., Flywheel and matching Pressure Plate (9 1/2"). The 3800s are externally (flywheel) balanced.

1977' Pontiac Tempest 3.8, 4 sp., 9 1/8"th clutch disc, with 1 1/8th i.d., 10 tooth center on the AX15 input shaft, same center as GM truck.

Thanks, Kiwi

Hey Guys,

We lost quite a bit of snow today, so I went digging around in My tire pile, and found, 2 sets of 4, late model GM 16" steelie wheels. With decent tires.

I had heard , that GM 1/2 ton lug pattern was the same as Toyota truck, but never really cared........All the sudden I care!

They are the same, 6x139.7mm pattern! The Toy has 12mm studs, GM 1/2 ton, has 14mm studs. So I would have to use Chevy S-10, 12mm lug nuts, but could then, screw on the Chevy center caps.

I needed the wheels to, because My 90' Toy has 15's

This is Really getting Weird!

My Spring Score! 1 set Winterforce, 245/75/16's, and 1set of Michelin XCS's, 265/75/16's. About 55% worn but servicable, for testing purposes

I will have to enlarge the GM centers about 3/8th's, will use plasma cutter with wooden guide. I think?

Thanks, Kiwi

nice find. just make sure to use the right lug nuts because toyota's are hub-centric and it looks like those GM's are lug centric. You've got steel wheels on it now so your current lug nuts should work. The aluminum ones will not (and vice versa)... ask my friend that borrowed my sr5 wheels and not the lugnuts... they were all loose in 10 miles...
As for enlarging the hole, plasma's are nice, very nice, just make a nice jig as you suggested. Only other way i know is a machine shop, but, screw that, might as well put that plasma to use!

Hey Guys,

I got My setup together this morning, and did Not have to trim the AX15 input shaft. Correct TB found.

I have full disc engagement, and full pilot bush contact, with no spline to flywheel contact.

Almost ready for first test fit, in the Toy.

Thanks, Kiwi.

Hey Guys,

There is something fundamentally wrong, with pulling a good running truck, in the shop to pull the motor out...... But I did anyway!

The Pic's tell the story.

Ready to come out.

As You can see, this truck works for a living.

Out in one! (camera operator error)

The money shot.

Surprise! The V6 is smaller.

Another comparision.

Test fit tonight.

Any heads up, on shifter locations, drive shaft flanges, 3.0 to 22re crossmembers the same?, ect., would be appreciated!

Thanks, Kiwi

update

Hey Guys,

Well, 11 hrs. later it's IN,..... I figured out how all these other people are swapping V8's into 2nd gen's,....They have straight axle front's. I Dont.

IFS makes the exaust and oil pan a pita, mounts all good, will post more detail, after My recouperation from todays Pioneering! haha!

Goodnews is, trans, drive shafts, crossmember, bolted up like they belong there. No Mods! Shifters are only about 1.5" rearward, and will be able to use stock shifter boots, with a little sheet metal work.

Here's some pic's

edit; It would be nice to hear what You think.

Thanks, Kiwi

Hey Guys,

I have a question.

The 22re fuel pump runs a regulated pressure of 37#'s, does anyone think I'll have a problem running it @ 52#,s ?

Thanks, Kiwi

Hey Guys,

Heres some pic's

One of My custom Chevy 16" steelies installed, with sissy tires,.. GY Wranglers coming, nice used, 4 for a $100.

I cut the Toy's motor mount brackets, like so,...added some 1/4" plate and a piece of 1"x1 1/4" square tube, to get........

This. Simple and strong.

Right side installed.

Left side installed. Now I can take the motor hanger off!

The motor is square, with plenty of room up front........

and plenty of room in the rear. It looks like it was made for this motor, haha!

Saturday is oil pan and exaust day! More pic's soon.

Thanks, Kiwi

That must be why I get 20 mpg from a 3.0
