If you're trying to return it to stock performance, sounds like the 4:56 is the key.

If you're doing it for performance reasons, I'd go with the 4:88.

Personally I'd do the 4:88 minimum. Not only will it give you more zip, but if you ever lift it and go with a bigger tire it won't hurt as bad and you won't necesarrily have to redo this expensive job again.

What calculator said that? Did it account for your final drive gearing of .705?

I'd go with 4.88 or 5.29 myself based on 13 years of driving a Toyota auto tranny and using 4.88 gears with 31 inch tires for 45,000 miles of that time. I also have used 5.29 and 5.71 gearing with 33 inch tires on the highway in the same Toyota.

I say take your lead from Toyota engineers who put 4.88 gearing with 31" tires from the factory or from others that drive Toyota trucks with automatic transmissions.

I have 30's on my truck with a 22RE 5 speed and it is not bad. It has 4:10 and 4th gear will clime long hills with no problem (4th is 1:1). 5th is a bit of a dog so I would say that with your autos 3rd being 1:1 then your top end is the same. I would think that 4:56 would bring it back to stock but if I were you I would go with 4:88 because the weight of the tires also comes into play.

Wrong! I can't believe the amount of misinformation that comes on this subject from guys with 5-speeds assuming everything is the same with an auto. I suggest some people here read Yotatech's policy here on misinformation:https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/misinformation-81889/

Once again, the top gear in the auto is HIGHER than 5th gear in the 5-speed.

The Toyota autos have a final drive of .705-.688 depending on the model

The Toyota 5-speeds has a final drive of .855-.802 depending on the model

So if you look at the difference in the 5-speed as you shift from 4th and 5th you are shifting from a gearing of 1 to about .850. If you had a 6th gear a logical next step would be to .7 would it not? So with the auto it is like we are shifting from your 4th gear straight into what would be the equal to your 6th gear if you had one.

Ya but I am assuming that because the 3rd gear is the same that Toyota wanted it to have a taller 4th so to go back to a near stock configuration just match up the 1:1 gear speeds and you will be close. If I downshift into
4th and have power going up hills then the auto will do the same, backshift into 3rd and have power to climb.

If you put to much gear in it you will loose your higher cruz and get quick shifts all the way to 4th. I guess it depends on what you are trying to do.

Lose your higher cruise? You 5 speed guys have no idea what it's like to drive a truck geared to go 120 mph but only have the power on hand to do 70mph. When I was running 5.71 gears I had a higher cruise than I do with 5.29s, you want to know why? Because I finally had the gearing to match the POS 3.slow engine's output. I could do 85-90 mph all day long with the 5.71 gearing, with 5.29 and 33s I'm back to the way it was stock with 4.88 and 31s and its a dog. I can bearly pull 4th gear. If I'm going with the wind I'm ok, but turn me around with a headwind and I'm stuck dropping down to 3rd. Ever drive 300 miles across the state into a headwind in 3rd gear? I have and it's not fun. I'd love to see you 5 speed guys pull a 6th gear at 90 mph with 150 hp.

you're probably better off with 4.88's, altho the calculator will probably tell you to get lower. 4.88's shouldnt cause any issues as long as you dont mind not being able to do 90 on the freeway (you shouldnt do 90 anyway, especially with 31's)

With 4.88s and 31s you will have the gearing to go 100-110 mph, but here's the catch you won't have the power to pull the gearing unless you're going down hill or have a strong tailwind or both. You would be able to cruise faster with 5.29s and 31s because you will have the power to pull the gear. Top speed with the 5.29 /31s will be about 85-90 without going much over 4000rpms.

Here's the best gear ratio calculator that I've seen. It is quite complete and has all the transmission ratios already for you if you know the transmission model number.

Enjoy

I have a 5 speed, 31's and 4.56's in a 95 with the 3.slow. I can't imagine how bad that would be in an auto. I couldn't hold 70 up an incline without downshifting until i got a new intake, and even then i was floor boarded. I wouldn't suggest anything lower than 4.88's if you want any kind of highway driveability, and if your not going to get on the highway go way deeper.

I have the same 3.0, manual, 4.56, only with 33X12.50. I plan on going to 4.88's on my truck but if I had a auto I would go with 5.29's because of larger steps between gears and the higher top gear. Just my 2 cents.

I have an 88 with 4cyl 5 spd and I've already made the expensive mistake of going too low. I'm running 32's and regeared to 5.29's and it was waaay too low. Couldn't drive but about 60 on the hwy and it sounded like it was going to blow up. I just regeared to 4.56's and its very usable.

With your auto tranny, you could go a lil lower (4.88's) if you wanted and be o.k.

P.S. My 88 5sp was stock with 4.10's. My old 85 auto 4cyl was stock with 4.30's.

This might sound like a dumb question, but what if i just went back with the stock diameter of tire but with the same width of the 31x10.50's?

hm? 28x10.5's? It would be the same gearing requirement as stock, with slightly less gas mileage (more drag). not sure what it is you're trying to acomplish?

Sounds like some poeple are afraid to rev the engine, Im pushing 300k no rebuild and have no problems with 32", 4.56 and a 5spd, I sometimes try to shift to that imaginary 6th gear at 75 (3.2k rpm).
I find the powerband in mine is above 3.5k rpm and It will still rev above 5k in 3rd and 4th.
