Okay so your saying you think your rig runs better, but it is getting worse gas milage? Could you just be lead footing it more cause it has a little more pep to it? I know I get really bad gas milage on freeway going 70+MPH. But when I do the speed limit, at about 60 or so I get noticably better gas milage. I usual check my milage by the tank.

Coul you have put the filter on backwards? I don't know if that's possible but something to think about. I get around 20-24 in my 87 4runner with mods and that's driving up a steep grade half the time.

Hey whitetaco02, wow!! I thought it onlu happened to me. I had an 88 4runner 5speed v6 and when I changed the fuel filter my Kilometers dropped. I now have a 91 4runner 5speed v6 same engine type and changed fuel filter and again noticed big drop in kilometers. So few months later I bought another Fuel filter, this time spent the money to buy stock toyota fuel filter and still no change in Kilometers. When I had the truck I had about 335 KM now I get about 270km. what could it be? Anyone please have an idea why this happened and what I can do to improve fuel consumption. I haven't changed my oxygen sensor yet because engine light hasn't lit up. So i beleive the O2 sensor is okay. I have tried many times to figure out what is going on but with out any luck.

So if anyone has anyideas PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! help.

Many thanks in advance for any help,
Scoolro

I have the window sticker for my 93 4x4 v6 pickup and it reads 15 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. It also has estimates and it says it can get aslow as 12 mpg depending on driving conditons driving habits etc. So this is the nature of the beast. your rig is probaly running perfect. this is the price we pay to drive these nice rigs.......

M/T tires don't help

My previous truck was an 88, 22r with 31" BFG M/T and 4" Trailmaster lift. I lost a lot of power and some mileage with the lift and tires. Call me crazy but I think a lot of the change was due to the mud terrain tires as opposed to the TA tread. Think of it this way, when you're doing 60 mph on the highway the top of your tire is doing 120 mph through the air. I think the big knobs of the mud tires take away mileage and power on the highway. Especially when there's not much power to spare.

You might also spend some time looking for any vacuum hoses that might be unpluged or leaking. This could throw off your fuel mixture at certain rpms.

So does anyone else know why the lost of kilometers\mileage on both my 4Runners when I changed the fuel filter.

I am still lost. 88 4runner changed fuel filter and noticed within days loss of mileage and now I have a '91 4Runner and again lost about 50 KM in kilometers with another fuel filter which is OEM from Stealership. Again only days I noticed the change of kilometers when I changed the filters.

Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Put the old one back in. See if your mileage improves.

I get just under 20mpg on my truck, which I believe is in as good a state of tune as possible. Everything replaceable has been done (filters, ignition stuff, etc) I've got a header and full free flow exhaust, run my 31's with about 40psi, recently adjusted valves, etc.
I do live at about 5000 feet elevation, and we have crappy winter gas right now, so I'm hoping to get a couple more MPG's when the summer gas comes back, but I can't imagine it will get MUCH better.

a seafoam treatment usually helps. Just last night i did one on my brothers gmc truck with the 5.3 v-8 and now it runs awsome. He has a tiny exhuast leak where the manifold connects to the pipe and a puddle of black crap blew out where it was leaking. His engine idles better and revs out way smoother. we didnt even give it a good treatment yet either.

Also check the drivetrain. Make sure all the the u joints and the wheel bearings are well greased. also check to see if your u joints are worn out. after putting in new u joints and got it balanced, my mileage went up quite a bit.
also make sure your are topped off on gear oil in the tranny and the differentials. maybe go synthetic

for $2.50 I could ride the bus all day long with a transfer

i changed my 22re's fuel filter and pretty much everything else, except injectors, and have been averaging almost exactly 20mpg since last september. i also learned that the entire time ive owned the thing, the distributor was off by a tooth. go figure. its never felt like its running 'well' but in the end I think the numbers are what matter most. it doesnt sound like a smooth newer toyota, and it definitely looks like a beat up old pile of rust. but hey, 20mpg with 4.88s and 305/70r16s is nothing i can complain about.

as for your problem, 12mpg on roads with a 22re should never happen. check to make sure everything is in line. do as many checks per the fsm as you can. ill bet something will jump out eventually. maybe some vac lines are routed improperly, or hoses cracked. make sure your distributor is installed properly (lol).. timing set right, valves adjusted to spec, cold start injector not behaving weird, IACV not stuck open etc

also the auto doesnt do it any favors at all..
